As of October 6, 2005, Autodesk will no longer offer Gmax® software as a stand-alone product. If you are interested in other 3D animation, modeling, and rendering applications from Autodesk please check out Autodesk® 3ds Max® software. You can download a free 30-day trial, view product demonstrations, read customer success stories, and get more information about this powerful, versatile product.

The only other free 3d modeler I know is Wings3d: http://www.wings3d.com but I've never used it.
Blender is quite easy to use, after learning how the gui works. I really like the way. But you might have to run through some howtos to get used with it.

You can try Silo (http://www.nevercenter.com). It's just US$109, and works wonderfully.

Could give ZModeler2 (http://www.zmodeler2.com) a go, but it's to 3DS Max as MS Paint is to Adobe Photoshop.

Put a little more effort into blender, trust me it'll pay of. I switched from max to blender never regretted it. It has everything you need.

Okay so I did have to get used to the blender way of doing things, so what.
In case you didn't try this: drag the top header(menubar) down and you get the preferences, or click on the left icon(window type) and go to user preferences.
go to view and controls change the view rotation to turntable and set middle mouse button to pan view. use shift instead of alt to rotate the view now.
