View Full Version : *.RLA problem
syntetik 02-06-2003, 07:36 PM some of us were recently pointing out the z-depth floating point Maya problem and its not friendly look (Maya versus Z-Depth thread).
Well, I was compositing an *.rla sequence in After Affects and it caused a CRASH everytime I added DOF 3d effect and wanted to pick the z-value by R-M-Button from the picture.
It said "an abnormal condition has been detected". I think it´s a Maya problem, so I´m posting it here :p
just tell, if you have similar experiences (while I´m re-rendering the sequence with a bit changed z-depth).

since i am no after fx user i can only guess that probably afx has a problem with the non normalized z-values from maya ranging from something to something and not 0 to 1 like exprected by some applications..
but really: just guessing :)
have you tried rendering in .iff format?
maybe that works better?

yes, you´re a shake user if I´m right :p
I´ll render a short test sequence with *iff , I´ll see.
And I´m thinking about giving a try to that Shake :)
or Combution. But Shake was used in some Tim Butron´s projects, well it´s personal :)
thanX for reply alexx

hehe :) i just guess shake is a bit more expensive and really not perfect for everything..
if you do a lot of time based more 2d like animations after fx is definitely the better go..
if you wanna do fx compositings, keying, color-matching and stuff like that and do really weired things with your rendered images: go for shake..
i can just recommend it.. it is incredible open but sometimes as well incredible how few "regular" effects are built in... e.g. every new shake user will be looking for the "glow" effect quite soon - it is not there ;)

my current project is all 3d.
This thing is also looking good:
from M.P.C. making fx for H. Potter "..John then wrote a set of plug-ins in Shake called “Norman” which allows you to completely re-light objects in Shake. You can create lights and move them around exactly as you would in 3D, but the results would be in near real-time."
I will finish my project with compositing in A. Fx. but then I must try that Shake :buttrock:

one "gag" you can do in any comp package is to create yourself something like light layers:
take your scene you work on.
give all a white lambert shader and now create 3 lights:
1 red, 1 green, 1 blue and place them so it lights your object from even sides.
take the resulting images to the comp program and seperate the rgb channels from it.. now you have 3 light directions that you can use to carefully (!) add or subtract light from certain areas.. that helps a lot especially when you do compoited shots with live and cg elements, since you can fine tweak the result in post..

OK. this sounds like magic to a me, who never seperated RGB channels in post :)
consider that I´ve discover the need of compositing 3d scenes about a month ago. But now, I would composite even very simple scene - that´s called CHANGES! :)
BIG thanX for this tip!
