rendering an mov right now.. 500 frames long.. I have to stop it. how do I halt the render before it finishes without lossing everything!

Not sure if that's possible...
my advice (not a solution though) would be to render to a .tga or .tif file sequence. You can import all the frames into Quicktime Pro and export a .mov with all the compression and codec options available in 3dsmax or, if you don't have QT Pro you can use Adobe Premiere or Adobe After Effects... not sure, but most certainly Combustion will do the trick as well...

I'm sorry this is not a solution and that you'll probably lose the already rendered frames, but it will save you some sorrows in the future.

yeah kickin my self now.. I knew I could rendered to a file sequence.. but before I went to bed it said 8 hours.. perfect.. but I didn't think about the rest of the scene and how much longer future frames would take.... ugg.. I guess I'll just wait it out.. off to the gym now...
