i know what you mean but lets face it, v1.0 is always a beta in reality. at least theyre being honest, and its a free upgrade to the next one which is more than a 1.0 release comes with. i think it could actually be good as it will probably throw the beta to a much wider audience and get them more feedback and maybe a bit of $$ to actually make a solid v1 release. you never have to buy it if you dont want to, we are still free in that regard.

Bitdefender and Norton reports a Virus while switching to the Downloadsite!

hmmm... still get that .wmf tryin to download automatically and when I get to the purchase page, it displays my country, state and city on the top left, is that necessary?
I don't really get that 'basic' version. I thought it was going to be limited feature wise not usage wise. They should call it 'academic version' instead since that's pretty much what it's for.
At $649 or $160 more than Zbrush , I'm not sure it'll make people switch from Zbrush with texture painting and IIRC free upgrade to v2.5 which will give them comparable feature set.

Yes, I get this as well with Avast warning me of it.

I dont *think* there was any info (I could be wrong). I guess whoever put the trojan up, might have found the info on the server and put it up - or just made up the info to get more people to visit.

At the time of this writing (maybe they'll fix soon):
Their main page has two hidden IFRAMEs that come from another site that try to load the exploit code. (I examined the pages in a text mode browser to be safe) It's likely the Mudbox servers have been compromised by someone else. It's been this way for DAYS (there's another thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=422338) here on it)
The payment link leads to the 'sandbox.paypal.com' service which is the development environment for paypal payments. (Meant for testing your site's integration with the payment service) so someone is asleep at the wheel, or just doesn't know how to properly handle the money xfers.
There's no contact info on the site for any 'real-world' contact (phone/address). And if you read the thread referenced in the first point, attempts to contact through administrative email accounts appear to bounce.
Any of these alone should be enough to keep your wallet closed, especially the hacked server one. There's no guarantee there's anyone at Mudbox is actually getting your info. If someone can hack the site to insert exploit IFRAMEs, they can change it to redirect to an alternate payment provider, collect emails for spam, etc. The fact the site has been like this for days is a very poor showing on Mudbox/Skymatter's part.
To launch a store in the middle of a hacked site seems suspect at best.

The lower priced version is for non-commercial work. (thats what it says in parentheses)

To launch a store in the middle of a hacked site seems suspect at best.I'm also being offered to open some sort of virus as soon as I hit the site.
It seems to be embedded on all their pages.
I think the MB team needs to hire some hardcore security people.
They need a little banner that reads TrustE or something equivalent to earn people's trust again :buttrock:
Best is to stay away from the site until something like that happens?

i just accessed the webpage and there's a comparison sheet available: https://mudbox3d.com/site2.0/featurechart.html
i agree that it's quite a put-off for now that their site has been compromised. anyway, without texturing capabilities ... it's not the only put-off for the time being. ;)

I just wish that they would release the Linux version. It doesnt seem like zbrush will have a penguin attached to it anytime soon... So my hopes are with Mudbox.

hey guys, i did not download that.... does my pc still get infected with a virus?.. of course i goin to make an scan....
by the way, just asking
-since the site is bein under the influence of a virus would not be posible that all that info of buying mudbox would be false?... i mean someone could have acces to the control panel of the website and change some things....???
i ask because it seems that that info of buying and the virus came at the same time...
if someone have a successful buy of mudbox beta let us know:)
GIJoe what were the differences between noncommercial and proffesional? Cant seem to access that page now:( .

It says non commercial , aka educational version. You cant make money off of it. I dont think they would limit any features.

There is a group news mail they send every now and then ,, if all the buy stuff was real they should have said that in a mail, and haven't got any from them ,, yet.
Also that price if real will sure giveback zbrush the edge.

actually, they do. They limit you to 5 layers per mesh, no hdr support, no speed review and no node view
thomaspecht
10-29-2006, 01:59 PM
there is also a limit for image output (floating point?), if i recall right. and the network licensing is unavailable in the edu version, not that it matters to hobbyiests, i guess.
now, seeing how the site has suddenly changed and there's no mentioning of purchasing options any more, i wonder if it was a hoax, after all. seemed strange that they were trying to sell something labeled beta as well. let's see. :)

If the website has been hacked, then how are we to know that any of the information on the site is genuine? I would think mudbox being released in any form would be a big story, and skymatter would have launched an ad campaign with it or something. Just my 2 cents.

BigCurly has the right idea. It's been compromised since at least Friday.

Best of luck getting it sorted out Dave. It would be nice if people spent their time and effort helping out each other instead of bringing them down. With that being said, catch them, tar and feather them and then slap them with a hefty fine. What morons.

Just curious, anyone suspect corporate espionage? to me it seems strange that of all the apps out there that some random hacker could attack, they chose this one? I don't know maybe I am too cynical.

seems a good target as any others. hyped. anticipated release. desired by many. easy target and i say that with no disrespect to the web devs behind skymatter's site. you just wouldn't put in alcatraz like security on a site that simply tells people about the product.

The fact that this supposed availability of Mudbox was announced on a Saturday should've been a dead giveaway. I mean, don't most software companies make such announcements on a Monday or Tuesday ... or at Siggraph?
