View Full Version : Missing objects and deformations, help plz.
FusionDG 02-06-2003, 05:29 PM Hello,
I don’t know what to make of this.
CURRENT LOOK = WRONG
http://www.fusiondesigngroup.com/pics/table_wrong.jpg
I have a dining room table setup that is acting weird. The glass table top and the rug are supposed to be round. As you can see, it is not. Also, the wood frames are missing from the chairs. Everything was fine when I was doing the final renders. Now I am working on a camera animation flying through to do a walk through animation, so I haven’t messed around with any of the modeling at all, but things somehow chnaged to the above look.
CUT AND PASTE SAME NULL OBJECT INTO NEW SCENE = GOOD
http://www.fusiondesigngroup.com/pics/table_right.jpg
Now when I copy the null object that has this entire setup in it, and then paste it into a new scene/file, everything looks peachy keen [the plates and bowl are not supposed to be showing in this object, so it's ok that they do not show up here].
**EDIT: And the table top doesn't have a glass material in the first pic just to highlight the problem.**
What gives? I'm sure it's a really stupid n00b thing on my part. :annoyed:
Any ideas?
TIA,
Paul

My best shot would be that you modeled the chairs and some other stuff using instances that refer to some primitives like cubes, cylinders, etc...
If you have an instance of a box named cube01, for instance (eh eh), and you draw another box in your scene named cube01 all your instances will refer to the last box, thus creating a mess!!
I hope this helped in any way...

Wow, thanks for the speedy reply!
Ughhh, that sounds like it may be my problem.
I have had a couple of other things that have disappeared on me during the project and I had to redo something, I forgot what it was though. I bet I ended up renaming the instances or the item that was instanced. I guess I should have better “housekeeping” habits when naming items and not get lazy when modeling.
I’ll go through and rename items and see what happens.
Thx,
Paul

If you're using R7 then I'd advise keeping all the object names lowercase too, as it's csae-sensitive when looking for names.
Edit: you have to able to type "case-sensitive" properly, too, which I can't...

Humm, the renaming thing doesn’t seem to be panning out for me for some reason.
I have two more pics to attach. What I have done is to save the file under a new name, and then I erased EVERYTHING, except for the delinquent rug. As you see, it is still in the shape of an octagon. There are no duplicate names of any sort as you can see in the object manager
http://www.fusiondesigngroup.com/pics/rug_bad.jpg
I then cut and paste this into a new file, and whamo, it’s all good.
http://www.fusiondesigngroup.com/pics/rug_good.jpg
Now I start thinking, well if it works on one item, why not the cut & paste the whole *!@#% scene? Well, that’s what I did, and guess what?
It worked. Can you believe it? http://users.skynet.be/gedi/emoticons4u/mad/1019.gif
*SIGH*
What happened? Got me hanging, but it must be a project setting I'm guessing, because it doesn't seem seem to be related to any of my modeling/naming/n00bie techniques. I’m stumped; downright stupefied. http://e4u.consoleradar.com/crazy/1087.gif

I sent in a request to Maxon w/the zip for them to look at. Maybe they can give some insights
Thx,

Paul,
I took a look at your file...the problem's really simple to solve.
In the scene where the rug appears octagonal, the scene's display Level of Detail was set to Low. The problem vanished when you copy/pasted into a new scene because CINEMA defaults to a High L.O.D.
Simply switch it back over to High (Display => Level of Detail => High) and you'll be golden.
Concerning your other questions, give me a little time...I'll see what I can dig up...

Thanks, uhh, yea, that fixes everything. I knew that eventually it would come down to a complete n00b mistake. "STUPID, STUPID, STUPID"
Hey, at least it was an easy fix
If the chairs problem is not instances do you have any compositing tags on anything Paul?
Stu.

Hey Stu,
Actually, moving the LOD setting from LOW to HIGH fixed everything, even the chair legs. I remembered what happened. I was doing test animations within the viewer and wanted things to move along faster so I changed the level of detail setting, dumb that I forgot that :hmm:, oh well....
Thx :),
Paul
