Hello!

I working now on one project which involves creation of an environment(sea and some islands.) It needs to have some cartoonish look.

Ok i've created some water surface.
But when i put an object into water i got some large, horrible reflections.
I tried to change the refraction and some other parameters, but it didn't really help.

Any advice what am i doing wrong ?

I used 3dsmax.

Could you post a screengrab of your material tree? Difficult to tell you want's wrong without knowing how it is set up.

ok, here's a snapshot of a water material settings:water_material (http://pww.evitech.fi/dap01s/f02/efusion/stuff/ef/water_material.gif)

Instead of using a Standard material, look into using Raytrace. The Reflect/Refract map type isn't accurate enough to create convincing water.

Thank you for your reply. I'll try to experiment with raytrace. Though raytrace material takes a much time to render. Is it the only possibility ?

Also about refraction: is it better to use 'thin wall refraction' ?

Alright i've been experimenting with raytrace material for water. It turned out a bit better(no ugly relflections anymore :)) though the water looks a bit fake.
Here's what i got. Any advice what i can improve ?

A snap of a material tree is here (http://pww.evitech.fi/dap01s/f02/efusion/stuff/ef/water_mat.gif)

No replies? Anyone ?

Well, you're using Noise in your Reflection slot, instead of a scene reflection. It seems to me that the island isn't being reflected anymore. Though I haven't used Raytrace much, so I can't offer much advice.

Isn't there a tutoria scene file of an island? Might offer some pointers therein about materials...

I suggest that you go grab SimbiontMAX (http://www.darksim.com) - its a plugin which allows to open darktree procedural materials in 3dsmax. A huge cache of materials follow with that package, including waters/liquids.

to posm :
yeah, u are right now the island is not reflected almost at all. I guess messed up too much with reflection/refraction maps.

I'll take a look today at some tutorials on this subject. It would nice if u could point to some good ones if u know by chance.

Actually the first scene was based on one tutorial, but i got those ugly reflections for some reason.

I'll take a look today at SimbiontMax. Maybe it will work better. Thanks for the tip,

for realistic reflections use fresnel falloff in spec.color slot

Thanks for the advice. I tried that and it really helped with reflections
