View Full Version : Character: Woman head
betelgeuse 02-06-2003, 04:38 PM This is not my first head, but it is my first female head. I'm going for pleasantly attractive - not movie star/ fashion model looks. I know the thyroid area on the neck protrudes a little too much; I'm planning to fix that. Any other comments? Oh, the modeling was done in Wings3d, in case anyone cares.

Hi betelgeuse,
I like the global shape of that face.
Here are some points I would fix first (as located in the enclosed image) :
http://tartopoms.free.fr/divers/images/wip_2289262003111043.jpg
1) That seems to be a big hole here, and the nose looks a little bit too "fat". Try to make it more thin. The area above the mouth is a too 'inside'.
2) That part is too much 'inside', as if she had taken a hammer in her head :)
3) What a bump ! Try to make it more continuous, so that the neck is more slick.
One question : how old do you want her to be ? For the moment I'd say she's 35 to 45 years old :)
Good work anyway, I'm impatient to see where this will go so update ! :)

Good eye, Toma. Great critique. You have the correct age range that I'm shooting for - mid to late 30's. I'll try to update soon.

Hmm.... I'm not sure. It looks a little wide to me from the front, but I like it fine from the 3/4 view. Is it the nostrils that are too big, the middle part, or both? Anyone else think the nose is too fat?

^^mmmm try to post it with a really shiny material maybe so we can see the problem easier but I have to say it again the model itself is really cool:thumbsup:

Yeah, the model is really great, I can imagine seeing the rest of her in a sort of peasant dress (like Shmi Skywalker from Episode 1). The only thing I can point out is the nose. The nostrils appear to be too large vertically.
I've attached this image, hopefully the changes aren't so subtle as to be invisible, if they aren't then it might give you an idea of what we mean.

Thanks, Temporal. I see exactly what you mean. Appreciate your taking the time. By the way, I'm in Georgia too - just north of Atlanta.

Minor update with shorter nostrils and placeholder color.

Much improved :)
Some stuff to say:
Perhaps adding a slight dip in the bridge of the nose would improve it some more?
You seem to have shifted the placement of the eye socket for some reason. Why, they looked great before? They now appear to extend downwards to far into the cheek, giving her a gaunt look which is very disturbing to the eye. You'll need to bring that up some and push back into the face a little, then it'll be perfect.
Question: This model has improved to a level of semi-photorealism, so what are you going to do about the hair?

Again, thanks for the comments.
>> dip in bridge of nose
Hmm... I'll see what that looks like.
>> eyesockets
Now that you mention it, they do seem set back into the face a little too much or the nose and mouth are too far forward. However, I didn't change this area!! All I can say is the last image accentuated this somehow. Maybe I should do the old "cross your eyes" stereogram to get some depth perception.
>> photorealism
Yeah, that is my goal, but I'm not really sure how I'll approach the hair. I really don't have any good way to do that at present (tools) - at least not in the way that I'd like. I'll have to do something for eyelashes as well Has anyone seen convincing hair from texturing the geometry that represents hair? If so, I'd appreciate a link to it.
