View Full Version : 3D Character: old man Norman
Hi there!
I just finished my latest private project. Say hello to Norman! :wavey:
Modeling and rendering done in Cinema 4D R8. My third character so far. I tried polymodeling. It's a great invention! :D Worked much better for me than boxmodeling. ;)
As you will see I didn't try to make him real. He's just supposed to be a comic-like character.
I want to thank Antropus, who inspired me a lot and who, with his incredible texture work lets my own appear just like a rough skecht...
I also thank Tommi and sad for their suggestions an critique. You helped me a lot guys!
And finally: thank you naam! His great and free Shader ChanLum created that soft skin appearance :)
So tell me what you think! C&C is welcome as usual!
If you want some more info on this- simply ask. I'll post a wire ect. if someone wants to see it... ;)

Aaaaah - his face expression is incredible :D
Great work
But pleeeeeaasee give him finer hair for his eyebrows...
Haha thx, Tommi!
But, I mean, Norman was a tough guy, you know? Though guys always have thick eyebrows! :D

creepy.. good textures..and give him eyelashes, and finer brows..and i suggest to do his lips bigger...
hey, good textures!! but i the model stays far of them in my opinion. I'd suggest doing thicker lips too, and the nose..doesn't convince me..mmhhh. But anyway it looks good!
It is looking pretty good! also i like it that u used c4d :D
My critic would be that perhaps the texture is looking a little flat, i dont know why but to me it looks as though u havent bumpmapped the texture, or have bumpmapped him just a little.
Also, his cheeks are maybe a bit too well defined, the saggin part i mean. It almost kinda looks like his cheeks are that way becoz of some skeletal deformation.
i really dont want to criticize u becoz i could never build anything nearly as good as that at this stage, but they were just things that caught my eye!
goodluck!

Nice modeling (can we see the wireframes) and good textures! I like the expression and i like the fact you used C4D :D
Thanks guys!
Here's the wire:

and here is a shaded version. :hmm: hmm, I didn't feel the model was soo far behind the texture?

And here are the scribbles I made to have a guideline while modeling...

BTW I don't really agree with the lip-thing, though it has been noticed several times :hmm: I think old people tend to have very thin lips...

I think the wrinkles on the chin and lips need (more) bumpmapping.
But it looks very cool
Jepp! Poly-by-poly :) Worked rather good. And it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be... ;)
ehm an LittleBoy:
..and give him eyelashes,...
I forgot to say: he has eyelashes. Have a clooose look :surprised
Greetings!
<edit> thx, Dreamwave! </edit>

Looks good, i don't agree with the others about the lips, i like them thin, it gives him character, not Every character has to be anatomically correct, that's not what art is about. I do agree the jowls are a little bit hard edged, i'd add a few extra edgeloops arond them to smooth them out a bit, shouldn't affect your texture too much. Also, if you look right above the eye, it may be on purpose, but it looks kind of funky, you've got what appears to be some texture stretching, from the lower part of his brow to his actual eyelid, the lines look too uniform. And hey, if you like poly-modelling, go for it, but becareful with your edges around your mouth, if you try animating him, you might get some weird stuff, the advantage of box modelling is that you can get correct edge loops for skin deformation. Good luck, he's looking good so far, love the texturing aside from that one little spot.
thanks for your comment, CelticArtist!
You have a very sharp eye :) and you are very right about what you said about polymodeling. it's indeed much more work to make it animatable. with boxmodeling mouthloops are almost included automatically :D
well anyway. im a real noob if it comes to animation :hmm: but i want to start it soon! i agree with you! this mesh doesn't look as if it was made for animations (and indeed it wasn't :D)
i experienced in cinema 4d it is very hard to change your model after making the texture... i'll have to ask someone... ehm Third_eye? can you help me? would be great!
well and about that too uniform wrinkles: it is highly likely that it is a disortion. or maybe i just painted it without thinking enough - it was the first time i painted a face texture so i must admit i'm not very good at it right now. maybe i have to study wrinkles some more
thank you all for your comments!
the more criticism they contain the better for me to improve myself!
greetings,
XerC
i already posted a critic, but perhaps i was too vague about it, but again, in my opnion the cheeks are too well defined. They are looking hard right now, as if they are caused by a piece of bone sticking out of the jaw.
Also, about the lip thing, i agree with u saying old people tend to have thinner lips, but in this, the upper lip is practically non existant, i think its more a matter of taste, but to me, perhaps just a little little bit more upperlip would already be nough
beside whatever critic may be said, thats the only thing for me. I like it alot tho, dont get me wrong!:)
dont get me wrong!:) [/B] Hehe, I won't!
Well yes, I think I see what you mean... hmm. maybe it's a bit overdone but generally Norman's skin tends to "hang down his face" so it would be possible that some bone contours are visible through the cheek rather strong, don't you think so? but i'll check it again ;)
one question: do you feel the same way with my scribbles? would be interesting to me...
thank you for defining your crit! :)
greetings,
XerC
actually!!! i was looking at the sketches and was thinking that there it didnt "bother" me at all!! it may sound strange, but there i found the hanging cheeks look rather good! Also, iin the wireframes i also dont see them as much as in the textured model.
But perhaps i said it wrong, but what i meant was that not the cheekbones are sticking out too much, but to me it looked like the ehm, hanging flesh part of the cheeks looked a bit, well too 'hard" at the end, the part where the skin is loose from the head (damn this is hard to explain lol)
i think that if u could erhaps sort that out, it would look so much cooler, again, to me, because especially if ur going for a semi-realistic comic look, the textures are outstanding indeed!
haha! thanks again, xeno! i think now i know what you mean :D and you're right it isexaggerated. definitely ;) i thought it was okay for i wasn't after a realistic look. it's meant to be a semi-realistic comic style, but hmm,... maybe i'll decrease the effect somehow if i go over it again :D
thanks again. i finally got what you meant!
greetings,
XerC
lol, glad we got that sorted out! and i must say this again lol, with textures like that it would(!) make an awesome comic guy!
i like it a lot! the eyebrows hair's a bit too thick i'd say. the eyelids cannot be seen very well. maybe it would increase realism when it was colored as the eyebrows are.
anything else is really stunning. it is your first finished head, isn't it? well done my friend! :wavey:

I think he looks like a robot.. The edges around his chin are just so sharp, it looks like it's some kinda weird metal skull underneath. Texturing is great. Maybe the eyes shouldn't be so sharp and perhaps a bit set back more into the head?? Everything else is great! You could improve it though, but it's up to you man! :bounce:

Nice model - good startled expression  and great looking wrinkles. Keep working on the jowls - add a little more detail and weight perhaps?

great modeling !
you motivate my work
Coool! Thanks again, folks!
@sad: yes, it's the first head I've really finished. The other two I started were more like finding a good modeling method for me. ;)
@Theta-Dot: You are right too. When I look at it now I myself start finding this hanging skin somehow disturbing. Hehe :D
@nitemare: YES, INDEED!!! Nose hairs have character! :xtreme: lol
@bobakabob: What exactly do you mean with "add some more weight"? Would be great if you could define what you mean. ;)
@Antropus: hehe, you really deserve this little hommage, my friend! Your work is really inspiring!!! And yes, you are right, my pic has a few bugs, but as I said, I've some more 11 years to practice... :D
@goonies: Wow! I love to hear that! Keep it up man!
Thanks guys! I love reading your comments!
