View Full Version : horsy of corsy and dolly update
verti 02-06-2003, 03:50 PM hi there!
here are some test renderings from my first lw scene. i must say that organic modelling in lw is preatty easy.
ive changed lighting in the scene - i think i will leave it as it is. few more models and im ready to start texturing.
comments and crits are greatly appreciated.
regards,
vertiis.

I'm not really good at seeing errors in an environment, but I'll do my best here.
Firstly, the porthole in the wall. The blue light coming in through it just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the scene. More likely it would have better to have something like unfiltered sunlight shining through. (BTW: where is this scene? A ship or a house?)
Next, the chair on the table looks very unrealistic, particularly the legs. They're to thin for one thing, as it looks like if someone sits on them, they'll shatter. Also, the place where they connect also appears to be too fragile. The sides of the chair could also use some additional details, maybe something extravagant to fit in with victorian like desk?
The same thing applies to the chair in the far corner . . .
The beams on the ceiling look like they can use some touching up as well, perhaps some indents on their sides to give them that "I-beam" look that is usually related to the construction of skyscrapers.
Lastly is the light from the chandelier. It seems like that this thing is giving off an awful lot of illumination for candles, so much so that it completely blots out the light coming in from the window.
Also, the shadows that are cast below it look very peculiar to the eye, mine at least. I'm not sure how to explain it or even fix, just something I noticed.
Hope this helps some, and I hope I didn't sound to harsh :)

thank you so much! your help is really constructive!!!...
as u may know im still at modelling part here. i was going to customize candles on the chandelier later. there are no textures yet. ill create final lights set when done with modelling...
again, thank you kindly. ill remember ur crits with next update :)

vertiis.
P.s.
oh no... you were not harsh :)

I second Temporal's comment about the blue porthole. It's like a magnet for the eye, especially since it almost in the center of the image.

Very nice model, good attention to detail. The sides of the wheels could be a little less sharp though, assuming they're made of rubber and not wood that is. Keep it up :)

thanks Temporal! u r really helping me out with this!
small update... lighting...

p.s.
20kb limit!? that is a serious bummer!!! this sucks!!!
In an attic would you really have an elaborate chandalier like that....maybe just bulb with a little string hanging down.......that's my suggestion...lighting still looks little harsh to me....maybe with the bulb it might be lit just a little better....great progress though....keep it up...

Ah, stability of the site comes at the price of user convenience. You need to find another site to host your pics at, because that one is so small it hurts the eyes when looked at for long periods.
Okay, on the scene:
The same shadow problem below the chandelier still (obviously) exists.
The main cruncher of the scene is the lighting. I can see all the layout and geometry, and tell that most of it is very good, but the lighting is killing it. Especially now, because the window/porthole is giving off far too much light for it's size and possible intensity. I mean there is no way in real life such a small window could cast light all over the room (unless there's a mirror on the far wall of course). If you tone that down, then you should be well on your way towards perfecting this :)
Something else I noted about the window itself: There's no frame around it, or glass for tha matter. I don't know if you were planning on adding that but hadn't gotten around to it yet, just pointing that out.
EDIT: I agree with Remi. A light bulb would probably better be suited for the scene than the chandelier, and it will make lighting easier too.

? :))) why u think so?
Temporal and Remi:
thanks for ur comments... u wont believe but ive forgot about changing the volumetric light before rendering hehe ;)
chandalier thingy... it's based on photos. i must say that ive started creating this scene bacuse i wanted to learn lighting... and texturing.
i think ill stop modelling now... and go to the lighting/modelling section... what do ya think?
thanks again,

Looking better :) The floor texture looks great, gives the entire scene a "darker" feel to it.
That blue light coming in from the window is pretty good too, but it still needs some refinement (for example, I don't think that the illumination from the window should hit the corner on the right of the picture.)
The candle flames also need some work, they just don't look realistic yet, and not only that, some of their light should probably affect the chandelier in which they're hanging on.
BTW: Is that a specular reflection on the window, or an error?

hi there :))
it looks like you are almost the only one who is helping me, Temporal ;).
that's my first attempt on some "real" texturing.
ive put a blue area light to the far left from the camera. this one is causing the illumination u are talking about. i will try to limit it.
as to the candle frames. yes im still working on them. actually im more experimenting (with procedurals to be exactly). i cant find any tutorial or materials on how to create realistic candle flame in LW. the chandlier is made from a non reflective material but maybe ill change that and add a little bit of glossy specular.
-> white spot on the window -> dammit... where did it come from? dont really know :(... the truth is i still have to play with volumetric...
thank you very much Temporal :) it would be cool if i could buy u a beer ;) or two ;)
