Hi!
it's a generic quetsion..... don't know what to say! can you be a bit more specific?
I use box modeling for everything except landscapes, for example, where for teh mesh of the ground I use a plane with displacement.
For characters, I use box modeling and now zbrush.

I always use polys to model. For hard surfaces and mechanical things I use box modeling
For characters my workflow is some thing like this...
1. Edge extrude modeling for the head
2. box modeling for the body and limbs
3. Edge extrude for any clothes or armour etc
4. Split the model up into organic and non organic parts
5. Use the non organic parts to create high res versions in Maya
6. Use Zbrush to create high res parts for organic sections
7. Use projection master to redraw an animatable topology on the organic parts
8. Import all the parts back into Maya
9. Adjust the low poly version
10. Manually unwrap the non organic parts
11. Pelt map the organic parts
12. Bake occlusion and normal maps
13. then texture and rig

I what I mean is to help use newbis have a better understanding on workflow in modelling. Like if you what to start to model a human. Do you start with a box? or patch? ...est. What are the steps to make and decisions to make in modelling.

Well, I use polygons.
I model a super simpel model in max --> zbrush --> back to max to retopologize --> zbrush again! and done.
I usually start from a box. =]
