I'm joining this challenge kinda late, but thought it would be a fun anyways. There's a lot of very cool work being done by everyone else on this challenge. Here's my entry:

Was thinking about a race of small creatures who live in the Iron Hills in the north east. A mouse-like species, friendly with Dwarves, skilled at mining... I'll put more background story later...

Nice model =), can you post a wire too? =)

Anyway, in my oppinion I think he looks to kind and perfect.
Maby you could do so that for example the clothes are a bit scratched ? =)

GL in the competition, may the best monster win :D hehe

Hey Spenen, here's a wire:

I know what you mean, I do want to dirty the textures up when I've finished modelling. Was going to add some folds to the clothes as well so it doesn't look quite so "meshsmoothed" :)

still got loads to do...

looking good but if he's skilled in mining, then perhaps he would wave muscular and huge arms to fit in.......

JoeRedstall
02-07-2003, 12:40 PM
Good point, I always imagined them as living or working underground but didn't think that they would necessarily be physically strong. I figgured that mining would be something that their society would approach as more of a craft akin to archeology or blacksmithing and something that they would enjoy taking their time in...

Very nice character  . Maybe make one of these earrings The One Ring? Just a thought...

minor crit: there's something wrong with the shoes, hmm "left side of the right shoe" is the problem place - it's too flat I think.

Haha, well, dunno if this would fit on Tolkien's books, but it works as a character, that's for sure... :D

Nice design, no important crits yet, maybe his arms look a bit too long, just an idea of course.
Great website by the way, I like your style a lot.

See you around

Hey Azazel, thanks for the advice - I think there are a couple of rogue five-sided polygons in the shoe that's distorting the shape a bit. I've been meaning to fix them but got sidetracked :)

Frinsklen - cheers :D I think the arms are gonna need re-shaping soon as I've put the hands on, but I agree they're definitly gonna need shortening.

Lookin' great!
The Hands added a lot of character to him, and detailing arround the shirt etc. is great.

The shoes (which I'm sure you'll get to will be great with similar detailing! The head is nice too, but it seems a little off balance, perhaps some cheeks would help!

my .02 ;)

Hey Farley, thanks for the advice :) Think you're right about the head, is slightly too large, was thinking I may have to scale it down when I've weighted the mesh and tried a few poses with him...

Have finally started looking at texturing and colour, think I'm gonna go with the yellow eyes, but will have to make sure it goes with the skin colour when I decide on it...

Think I'm gonna have to give up on the modelling if I want him textured for the deadline  , here's an update of the colour scheme I was thinking of.

Not sure about the eyes yet, will have to experiment more when I've done the skin texture...

Colors are very nice, 'cept skin, which is too pale IMO. And making irises bigger may help a bit for the eyes. Very nice anyway:thumbsup:

Cheers Grub

Thought I'd post an update seeing as this is supposed to be a work-in-progress challenge. i'm halfway through texturing and rigging so still have a few things to do. Started using Texturiser (a freeware plugin for Max) which has really helped me out (hence the wireframe texture over the head by the way).

Looking very nice.
I gotta join one of these challenges soon!

Frinsklen
02-28-2003, 06:46 PM
hey, those textures look good. Nice job.

If I were you, I would make sure I have him posed before the deadline, which is, in my opinion more important than texturing. Although if you could do both things, it would be great.

You don't have much time, show us a nice pose.

m_greenwood - cheers, look forward to seeing you at the next challenge

Hey Frinsklen - I hear ya, know what you mean about the posing. I've pretty much just about finished enveloping him, so all i've got to do now is finish texturing and maybe add some props or something...

Oz - cheers, love your work, good luck in the challenge :)

This isn't a final pose or anything by the way - arrgh, only 4 hours before the deadline ...guess it could be a final pose afterall... :surprised

Thats great Joe, the final pose really adds a lot of character to the ickle guy

Frinsklen
02-28-2003, 09:12 PM
ok, just a few hours left, but it's worth taking the time to change that pose.
His left arm doesn't look relaxed, maybe you could lower his elbow, and his right hand looks good but I think it would look more natural if his fingers didn't look the same, I mean, they're all bent with the same angle. Pose yourself in front of a mirror and take a look at your hands, arms, etc.

I also think you could add 2 or 3 lights within the scene (apart from Global Illuminarion which is ok), just to give him more variety.

I hope this helps.

Aargh, Frinsklen got your post 2 mins before the deadline, but thanks for your advice - much appreciated

Alas, I didn't have the time to fix all the things I wanted to :annoyed:, but I'm gonna leave it for a bit and come back to finish him later.

He looks really nice mate!
Do you have any plans to animate this little fella?
I checked your website and there are some nice characters there. I'd be interested to know how you went about texturing him, I always have problems with high poly models and usually just leave them with flat colours for shading.
Any tips would be great!
Cheers.

Hey m_greenwood, this is the first model I've actually tried to take a bit more time unwrapping texture coordinates. If you're using Max, then I'd really recommend you pick Texporter (http://www.cuneytozdas.com/software/#texporter) as it makes texuring much easier.

I'd also suggest checking this tutorial out - I found it very helpful :) http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/UVW_mapping_an_object/UVW_mapping_an_object1.asp

I'd not come across this one before.
I'll definately be in the next challenge methinks.
Thanks again.

:buttrock: sweet art! Well done!Do u animate it?

JoeRedstall
03-02-2003, 12:31 PM
I would like to do some animating with him, it's gonna be a challenge getting him moving 'cause his arms and legs are so short :hmm:

The thing that's bothering me at the moment is that Biped doesn't have any twist in the forearm, so you get very strange results when rotating the hand - the rotation should come from the forearm, but it starts at the wrist. Maybe I can add a few morph targets to compensate though, just as a quick fix so I can pose him more easily...

Well, I finally managed to find the time to finish this little blighter off :)

Modelled a backpack for him and am going to step away for now and call him finished. Hope to one day animate him, but for now it's on to the next challenge :)
