View Full Version : Blender beats DreamWorks and Sony in a CG/OSS Award
VirgilioVasconcelos 10-26-2006, 11:54 AM The Blender Foundation (http://www.blender.org) just won the UK Linux & Open Source Awards 2006 (http://www.linuxawards.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=14&Itemid=32) for the "Best use of CGI with Linux/Open Source" with their short movie "Elephants Dream".
Maybe this can get a bit more interesting when we know that the runner-ups were DreamWorks (with "Over the Hedge") and Sony Pictures Imageworks (with "Monster House").
Read more here (http://www.blendernation.com/2006/10/26/this-just-in-elephants-dream-wins-uk-linux-open-source-awards-2006/) and here (http://www.blendernation.com/2006/10/24/ed-nominated-for-uk-linux-open-source-awards-2006/).
Cheers

Not sure how it makes it 'more interesting'.
Elephants Dream was specifically focused to demonstrate the facility of Open Source tools in relation to 3D. Whereas DreamWorks and SPI usage was more tangential. Thus I would think it would be expected that Blender Foundation might be recognized in such a category.

Blender rockz :P
Well everybody who never worked with Blender, I think it is sooo great for being non-commercial, and its development is realyy really fast I think,
So, if you have time anyhow, give Blender a chance :)

Personally, I'm stuck. I like what it has to offer... but I still know Truespace. Plus, there are things I can expect in Truespace that I know Blender won't deliver.
If only I could somehow merge the two...

A customizable interface.
Well... Blender has a highly customizable interface. The only thing about the interface that isnīt customizable yet is the keystrokes, but thatīs on the way to change... =D
Sorry for extending the off topic thing...

Please, it might not be an oscar, but if you saw what they achieved and how they did it, you would have to agree that they deserve recognition of some sorts.
Blender is great, and so is XSI,maya and Lightwave and 3ds max but you won't get max or maya or lw new features without paying for a hefty upgrade fee and/or maintenance.
It is a somewhat under-estimated little package and although it may not have the familiar interfaces of the big 4 everything is there and works really well.
I'm not about to give up working using the usual software but I do enjoy the challenge and engaging in some cost free enjoyment has never hurt anyone. The Blender community has went through a lot to get where it is now and they certainly deserve being placed above dreamworks on this one.
Again Well Done to everyone on Elephant's Dream.

Importing models from other formats- like .3ds- with its mapping intact.
Importing .3ds period.
Switching from camera to camera
A manual that is just as up-to-date as the release.
Facial Animator (which is primarily what I am after)
I prefer Truespace's method of applying textures or maps. I can actually see it happening. In Blender, I have to take its word for it.
Plus, I really don't like Blender's append. In Truespace, if I want to bring another model into the scene, it's just as simple as opening a new file, without having to scroll thru its directories and selecting every part of it.

ok ok, the append thing could be better, and there are stuff that could be better, but you must remember that blender is open source, and that the people that made it/helps to make it, are not being paid for it, and therefore things might not be as good as they could be as fast as they could be,but even so, blender is an amazingly good program.

I don't disagree that Blender is a great app- especially for the price! However, if it is to be taken seriously, it has to be treated equal to the "pay for" apps., and that means criticism.
It might suck, but that's the reality of wanting to compete for the usage and attention.

Wow, I started off on Blender years ago. It's what introduced me to 3d. My first model ever was a hammer in blender.
Oh the memories...

Most large vfx studios use linux as their primary os.

The only thing I didn't like about the short was that it was short! Maybe what we have all seen was the begenning...or maybe it wasn't. The point I'm making is this: like other films that win hearts and BIG awards as this film has...how long before part two? Or is this just a dream.

Really? Why is that?
Not that I find it a problem, just wondering....
