I'm 29, about to turn 30 next month ...
My first "1st degree contact" with 3D was an obscure proggie for the ZX Spectrum named "VU 3D". Extruding was a luxury lol!
Then i picked up 3D Studio R3 and made my first walking dyno, i mean, a bunch of boxes and spheres and cones coming out of a background cut-out :)
Been in and out of 3D for about 10 years ... still am in and out ... also do a bit of post-prod and edit.

I remember "imagine". I think there was car model that came with Amiga Format that took literally hours to render. At the time I was stunned by how well it turned out.
I'm 27. I first tried Max years ago but abandoned it for Lightwave. When Max 5 came out I thought I'd give it another try and haven't looked back since. Once you've learnt how to use one 3d program it's so much easier to transfer your skills.

42. I started in computers with a homemade intel 8080. I had to program a bios and burn it into EPROM to get it to do anything. I found a program called POVRAY and did real raytracing on my first 386. I bought the 387 math coprocessor and was in heaven when one frame of video took 30 minutes instead of 30 hours. I started playing with Max about 3 years ago. I am not a professional with 3D, I make a living as a programmer.

I knew it, I knew it! The final proof after reading this thread. I always guessed that people who liked 3DS Max were mostly young people, kids actually, who like to play games and who teach each other that 3DS Max is the ideal modeling/animation tool that is mostly being used for games (even if it's used for a lot of other things). Since the kiddos like games, they try 3DS Max. Do you also notice that only a few older people replied? Because they all moved to something better once they got to know this big, slow fat elephant called 3DS Max. I tried it twice but I never liked it for one bit. 3DS Max is not made for artists, programs like XSI, Maya are however. The amount of members younger than 16 is amazing. Yeah right, and daddy didn't make a fuzz of it to buy them the software, duh! Nothing but warez kids who move from one app to the other because they can afford it (it's free).
I really wish you are sarcastic because it's probably the most stupid reply I've seen yet on CGTalk.
Max is as capable as any other application. Well I talk for myself, I'm on the games industry.
You tried it twice, now how can you say you don't like it. Go hide somewhere man.

Elysian:
I think your post is rather dim. I got a hold of my first copy of max when I was in high school and it was legal I was working and an engineering firm as an intern where I did CAD drafting for them (never really got into at that time). I got tired of CAD in college and started playing with it in the Lab where it was installed and legal. Out of college I went strait into 3d supporting my wife and now my and son.
A couple of facts: for the uninformed like Elysian.
3ds Max is the most widely distributed 3D Animation Package out there.
Expose 1 -- Over half the 3D images in there were done with 3ds Max. A freaking Art Book that celebrates 3D Art.
Based on the first fact. More young, old, black, white, and cherry striped people are going to be able to get their hands (like me) on more legal versions. And Illegal versions too, but I and they can get a hold of an illegal version of 3ds max, Maya, XSI just as easily but for what ever reason they choose 3ds max.
I choose max because of my own research and EXP. When I decided to make a 3d a career at the end if my schooling, I looked at 3ds Max, Maya, SoftImage, Light wave, and Rhino. I had a demo version of them installed, there were none that I felt where heads and tails above any of the others and therefore a must have. In my opinion they are more or less the same.
I choose 3ds max because there were a lot more jobs at the time that required it, largely because there are more seats out there, and its deployed in a lot more industries.
Schwinnz: good points.

WOW lots of variations in the age range...
Im 28 and maxing since 3dstudioR4 (yes the DOS version, wich I still have in 11 floppy discs) so that means about 10 to 11 years... freelancing and fooling around with it 7 or so years, Pro since 2001 and I still consider my self a MAX student.
For those with less than 18, you must feel very lucky to have all that time to play with such tools as MAX... ;)
elysian, I feel very very, dissapointed about your reply, I think you are making very light judgment about softwares, there are tons of posts all over the 3d forums about the advantages and disadvantages of all the 3d packages... and after reading a nice number of those posts, the conclusion is always that the artist handles the tool, not viceversa. If you think the software determines how good artist you are... let me say that you have a very short eye perspective of 3d and digital art in general.

Most people think I'm lying when I tell them I'll be 30 at the end of this year. The people I work with thinks I'm just barely in my early 20's.
Used 3D Apps off and on during the mid 90's. Now exclusively uses Maya for the last 6 months.

37...it's not the years it's the mileage.
I've been doing 3D for 12 years....99% of that time in AutoCAD working with solid models and mostly doing technical illustration for part catalogs. When I first saw T2 and then Jurrassic Park many moons ago my jaw hit the ground and I had a pretty good idea where CG was going to go. I finally got to fiddle with MAX about 1996 using the Autodesk Developers Group CD's, and even though the powers that be at my (former) place of employment were impressed that wasn't their bread and butter...so it got left by the wayside. That business no longer exists. So here I am in 2004 and I just started getting myself reaquainted with 3D Max again. This time I call the shots and I'm going to make damn sure it becomes an integral part of my biz. I guess if I have any advice for people it's don't get so bogged down in something that you let opportunities pass by.

just rolled into 30. have been doing 3d since 93 on POV (text interface! anyone remember that?) and truespace v1. have been working professionaly (started on 3d studio DOS) since 94, a year before i graduated college.
i went to the round of trade shows where they introduced 3ds max. i remember being blown away by the ability to go down the modifier stack and edit something so simple as the number of segments!

im 18 now, I've been working with 3d for a little over a year. I'm impressed with all the young people learning 3d apps. And btw, I hate you all because its not fair that you started before me, hahah! When I was around 13-16 I spent way to much time playing warcraft II on battle.net (with the ID Critterslayer for those who care) and I wish I had started 3d then, oh well. Anyway, I hope to finish my first short film by the time I'm 20, I already have storyboards for it but I'm not saying what its about!

28..
I got my very first 3d software ("imagine" on the amiga 500) around 1990.. no undo, no modifier stack, practically no ram.. and despite all that, i still miss the good-ol' amiga era !

Yes kind of the same I guess,
22, max user for about 2 years. Cinema before that. (school didn't have max yet.)
and waaaaay before that, around 14/15 someone gave me a little freeware program named raytrace. building objects, complete scenes point by point(vertex by vertex) Took me forever to build things, still i miss the nostalgic times. How easy it is to make several things now, but how more rewarding it seemed back then......

got commodore64, then amiga500 and lightwave.. god i miss those times..
i've been using max since ver1, before that 3d studio R4. i quess

yep think so.. and the last genaration is pushing the new.. this genaration has alot more options.. work wise, living wise.. and the parents and industry wants you to go for that.. and the whole world is turning faster.. so you are getting forced to catch up with it all the time..
something like that.. but sertainly more stressed
Well if you are feeling old, just do what Queen said..."just get on your bike and ride"
