I was doing an excercise in "Maya 4 Fundamentals" on modeling a head. However, since I have Maya PLE 4.5 with subdivision surfaces and the book had only emulated subdivision surfaces, I decided to use the real thing instead. Unfortunately there is a part in the tutorial where you duplicate half the head and then set up a connection between the two halves in the connection editor so all your actions in one half are mirrored in the other half. I couldn't make this work with subdivisions because the inputs and outputs are different (from the polygonal mesh that's in the book) and I couldn't find the properties I need to connect in order to make this work.

I hope this is clear enough. It's kind of hard to explain.

I find it works very well instead of doing the funky connections thing just to duplicate one half as an instance, setting the scale to -1 in whatever axis you want to mirror through.

Yeah, duplicate and mirror works fast and easy.

I set my pivot to the border and the -1 value in the duplicate box whenever I'm applying detail so that I can quickly "CTRL-D CTRL-Z" back and forth as I add new details...
