i am trying to create a texture for my character where his hand and arm look extremely hot (molten lava is the best descripyion i can think of).
I want it for diffuse but the character will also have a Spec map, i also want it to cool down as it travels up the arm,any suggestions.
Included below my early testings and the 2nd image is a pic i found on google and would really like to create something similar to his horns.

Illumination/luminosity map should do the trick. It basicly makes things glow like in the second pic.

well, if we go with proper color theory understanding then we can understand that oranges, red, and yellows are hot colors (which it looks like you got so far) greens, blues and violets will give you a color looking image.

It sounds like you want the arm to go from hot to average skin temp. So you don't really ahve to deal with the "cool" tones unless you really want to emphasys the change in temperature. You have a good start with the hot part. Depending on how you want the charactor you to look, you might want to consider what happens to the charactors hand as it gets hot, would the metal start to deform. That could help sell it quite a bit.
Adding a slight bit of those hot colors to the skin might help out.
