figured out i might make the deadline on this one. I was thinking of the creation chamber, though i´m not quite sure yet. Will be reading the documentation that is on the challenge page (since the only book we have in our library is borrowed till 11th november).

Most of all i´m hoping to learn some new stuff and have fun. Good luck to everyone else.

started on the water/river that is supposed to be in the image. Never done a river before or water before, so i´m quite happy with this first result. Going to be working a bit more on it when i start really texturing and refining the whole project, but for now this is enough. There will also be a waterfall in the distance... not sure if i´m going to be using particles for it or not. More updates later. Any C&C would be nice btw :D

Just playing around with the water. Does this look better? not sure my self... looks more like an ocean then the river feeling i´m looking for.. oh well.

Hey thondal, for the mean time, it looks just fine, but it could even be better if the water reflects something :) like the all ambience... let's go... show us more.

thanx. Not very good at texturing.. that´s my problem, but right now i´m just testing out and at the same time learning. Going to give it a go on the landscape soon. Will add a skie, and the clouds will be real meshes/particles so that they will give a sense of depth in the picture... Thanks for the comment;) still have about 1-2 hours left that i can work today :D

Made a landscape for a 3d sketch before i call in for today. i have to change the mountains and a lot of stuff, but not the worst. The landscape will be covered by grass and trees/vegetation.

Hey:D What's up Thondal?

Any newson magical pictures? The url is too long to remember so i had to bookmark it.

Good luck on your challenge. I dont know if i will be on for a while, I'm still tired from my swim meet and homework. I will try though.

Anyway, your water kinda looks like ice just to let you know :D

Keep up the good work!

ok, then i'll just add some snow then :P lol.. well not sure what to do yet. When it comes to the water, i'll probably work a bit more on it. Also thinking of widening the river, add a waterfall, a river from one of the mountains, and then add some depth in the view, and a sky too. Lots of stuff remaining. All C&C are welcome

Will probably do some buildings or spaceships eventually, but i´m waiting for the book. Have to read it.. going to take about 2 days, so... oh well. Untill then i´ll just continue with this concept, and see where it gets me. But it is a good thing in all of this... :P in 2 days, i have learned more about particles, light, shading and water... so... i guess when i´m done, i´m a bit smarter.. :D

I like the new grass, looks really good. The bottom right pic of collage is best. ANyway, try to add some details to sky :D

thondal
10-26-2006, 07:22 AM
Yes, i´m working on the sky now.. but the problem is when rendering clouds with blenders particle system, or volumetric clouds, then it takes like forever to render it.. right now, just to render one cloud it takes like 15-20 minutes of rendering on my macbook... So, but will hopefully be able to post some result within 1-2 hours.

just a little test with clouds. Had some problems while rendering.. took like 15 minutes the first test, when i found a setting that should have been turned off... then everyone of the others rendered within 30 seconds.

I like the clouds you made. Particle simulation or just a cloud shader? What software do you use?

thondal
10-26-2006, 08:41 AM
The software is Blender. I used a particle system and added a cloud texture on it, gave them a life span and alpha for transparency. Thanx for the reply.. will be uploading an image with the whole scene and the clouds. ;)

-thondal-

thondal
10-26-2006, 09:24 AM
just found out that from long distances the particles become more clear and the cloud doesnt even look anything like a cloud anymore.. So i have to find out if i can fix it in the settings or if i have to find another approach on the clouds..

Leichim
10-26-2006, 10:01 AM
You used tangent shading and blend texture on strand map input for the grass? It looks nice, but you might add some colored textures so the grass varies more in color, and add more particle emitting (static) objects with lower or higher values, so you have real difference between the lenght of grass.

Pretty good job sofar :).

thondal
10-26-2006, 10:23 AM
thanks. Yes, but I´m currently just working to get the scene up and going. I might just redesign the whole concept or scene, but right now i´m testing out how things work. Going to be reading the book a week from now, so hopefully I will get some new ideas then. I fixed my problem with the cloud. Almost at least, so i might be able to use the particles for cloud. The grass was made of particles and so on, but i guess i could always work a bit more on the variation of lenght and texture. But right now i´m out of time. More updates tomorrow.

Thanks for all the crits and comments so far.

Hey SImen,

I am waiting for the book to read as well. I liked the water tests you have done and the grass tests but I do have a couple of comments. Your concept is showing a very large scene and I think your grass (particles) won't really be seen. I think I would use a texture map for the grass and shape the terrain (changes in elevation) to give it definition. Just a thought.
Good luck the rest of the way and I agree with you that these challenges are a great learning experience.

Clouds are looking pretty sweet. They look as if they were painted into the sky :p Can't wait to see when you put the two together.

Finaly managed to get the clouds working somewhat properly. Had to move everything into a new scene and had to start over 2 times, because i messed up everything, and i kinda forgot to save (note to myself, don´t do that again). But the clouds are now in the scene, and i have changed the background color of the "world" so that it goes from light blue to darker blue. And the grass has been modified a bit.

any c&c?

Ok. Next update will come tomorrow. I will then be working on the waterfall from one of the mountains. Will fix the clouds a bit, and the ground a bit more. I might use alpamaps or poly to poly on the grass instead of the particles i have now. Will also take another look one the water maybe. If anyone have a suggestion on what i might fix, then please do say so.

Ok, not nearly finished with the book, but I got some ideas on the alexandria city in the second chamber. I still have to figure out a few things before finishing this city and that is. 1. Under standing the coordinates in the book, how many librarys there are and how many megas there are and where they all are or where they most likely are. But I started on a few sketches of the city, and here is the results.

Ok, so heres what i´ve comed up with. Next will be to start on some sketches and modleing some buildings. This will be my first time modeling buildings, but I hope to at least have one building ready and ideas for many more. Please wish me good luck, this is my first real big project, and all encouragment i can get i will take :P. Would just like to say to all (even though most wont read this) that there are so many great works and models in this contest, and it is really inspiring.

very nice start. for saving resources you can put in your scene with a bonus of extrapoly's it helps much to make sure what will be visable or not. far range things might be ok if meduim or low detailed with detailing rendered to normalmaps or grass just as texture, so the all over complecity has sort of a detailing fall off towards the horizon.
keep up the great work and hope that point helps you in your pcreationprogress :) keep on rocing!:buttrock::wip:

Hi there, your city is coming along nicely. Perhaps introduce some more variation to the buildings so they're not just square blocks. And maybe some structures that are somewhere between the heights of the major towers and the lower buildings so that those towers don't look so lonely.

well, according to the book the high buildings - "the megas" - are about 4 kilometers high.... so... not sure how i can make the other buildings that high. but i will think about it... it's weekend now, so wont be doing anything about the city this weekend.

Hello :)

Nice to see more people working with blender :bounce: , I just only wanted to say that I did a little test on volumetrics shaders (faked, but fast) in blender, so if you need more realistic effects in clouds, maybe you'll find usefull

wow! Cool.. loved those volumetric clouds of yours Mataii. Could I ask you for the link to the tutorial? Guess i´ll try to make something close to that later. I´m currently having problem finding time modeling, I have to work a lot.. there were like 4 bills waiting for me the other day... and they are still waiting and long overdue, :P so just have to do some overtime at work to make the wheels go together... oh well..

But i´m hoping to be able to do some updates today if I manage to find some time between the work :P. I´m closing in on an idea on how to make the buildings... I see that if I don´t start on them very soon I probably wont be able to finish this project properly :P

Ok... so.. this is going to become one of the megas.. currently it looks more like a lava lamp and a giraff, but i´m hoping that it will take shape as I work on it. My main problem will be to texture it, because i really suck at texturing. So I guess I will use at least a few days to get my result.
I´ve seen some of the megas that people have made, and i´m amazed, and I would be happy if mine where 10% of that cool.

hey,

thanks for the comment over in my thread! Of course i could give you some advises, let me see......are you going to merge these three parts together later? I think the most important on modeling is to achieve realistic scale proportiones, a good balance between big shapes and fine details. I'm curious to see the concept sketch of this building if you have some, because i'm not sure how they will look like at the end. In addition its a lot easier to model with a concept sketch as reference.

see you later

Hi there, Simen!
I like the "island" design of the city. The mega building looks a bit stange - more like some kind of alien household item. Maybe if you harpen the edges, the form would be more suitable for the building-right now its too soft . Here is the link to really cool future skyscrapers (http://www.davidszondy.com/future/city/skyscraper.htm) :). Maybe it inspires a bit?
Best,

Maybe You should add more sharpened edges...?

I´m hoping to get some more detail very soon, and some sharper edges will come. But time will show. I will make a render very soon. Going to be adding some simple material so that it looks a bit better. But any advice, just come with them. I´m not a very skilled 3d artis, but i´m doing my best.
Thanks for all the comments :D :P

OK. That didn't really turn out the way I wantet it to, so I did a bit more drawing, and came up with a concept that was a bit more simple to follow, and that still would "get the job done".
So here is the firs picture of the new mega. Hope you like it. More will come later tonight.

Ok, so after getting a few remarks on what my mega looked like, I figured out a few changes to make it look a bit better... so here the remake is. ;)

More updates might come later today, or the next week.

Ok. So I feel i´m done with the basic mesh of my mega, and I think it was about time. I will now concentrate on making the rest of the small buildings and some of the enviorment. More updates tomorrow :D

Ok.. just did a little "glass" test on top of my mega. Should i fix something with it? I´m going to be adding a lot of small details I guess, but not untill later, because now, i´m just working to put my scene together...

Any comments or crits?

Ok. Just did a quick set up on how I want the scene to look like when i´m done. I reckon I´m going to be doing a few changes, but i think i have somewhat of an idea on what it´s supposed to look like..(in my head at least). + I´m closing in on an idea on what i´m going to be doing for my 3-8 second render, though nothing too fancy.

Ok.. so right now i´m rendering a fluid test for the ocean (need it as part of my 3-8sec rend), will be posting a low poly, and perhaps a high poly.. depending on how long it takes.

Well, thought i check in after a few days... and what do i discover?? THE VIDEO DOESNT WORK!! DOH!

So... i just thought i´d do another test, but it turned out better then i had hoped, and so... here is the result. I managed to make the water look somewhat right. But just keep in mind, the motion of the water is not final... actually nothing in this clip is final, not the buildings, camera angle, the lack of fog etc is final....

HERE (http://s32.photobucket.com/albums/d19/thondal/?action=view&current=fluidtest.flv) is the link btw (and it works =) )

Well, beeing my first real big challenge this prooved to be too big for me. I had a lot to do while this contest was going on. But it was fun, and I will try to do something to at least send in a final image, allthough it won't be looking very good.
Oh well. Good luck to everyone else.

That's too bad. You were making some pretty good progress.

BTW, you did some awsome stuff with grass in the beginnining of the thread, could you please explain how youu did it?

thondal
01-20-2007, 01:13 AM
Grass = Plane, subdivide, add particles, change number of particles to some more than standard, change the Strands properties in the material panel to something more like grass form. And then a dirt texture.

That was somewhat the short version. If it didn´t help you, then sorry, and say it once more and i´ll find the tutorial for you.

OH well.. off to bed.
