Why don't you want to use PaintFX?
It can be really realistic.

If you have 4.5 look at the fur example which is ment to look like grass its very very good !! why not use that as a base and modify it to your needs ? if you have fur.

i will if i have too. i would just like to know how to do it without paint effects. maya has a lot of "gee wiz" stuff, and that is great, but i would also like to know how to do it from scratch. any help would be GREATLY appreciated :)

I believe it's called 'efficiency'. Why bother creating grass from scratch when in TV/Movies etc they use PaintFX???

not ALL movies and TV programs use paintfx. i want to know how to do it without using it. is that such a bad thing? doesn anyone have any suggestions on how to make grass from sctrach. not using paintfx...but from scratch? would be greatly appreciated! or is that just completely unheard of and stupid that i would even want to attempt doing it?

maybe you should look again at what people post,
read carefully this time. the key word here is "fur"
you can do this in maya 4 aswell

What if he's using mental ray?

Then he should say he's using it!
Apart from PaintFX and Fur, any other way would probably be really tedious and hard to tweak. Plus if you make grass out of polys the polycount would be really huge.

Render it as a seperate pass :) its not like you would use GI or FG on fur :scream:
Fur is the way to do it you can get really good motion out of it to and you won't get a crazy amount of geometry..

What if the rest of the scene has FG/GI? Would the grass stick out unrealistically? Hmm, I might have to do some testing in my free time.

The fur uses its own internal lighting i believe i guess it would just take some trial and error and see if it works..
I'm sure someone with some more experience could answer this..

Not really, for example the short Bunny that Blue Sky did, the fur was just raytraced and composited over everything else that was GI.

You could do it like they did on shrek. Just make 1-3 polygon triangle pieces of grass with tweaked normals so it looks like grass blades. Then you can just instance it and the number of polys wont be that bad.

to create grass first create fur and make the base with really big and the tip with small, Then make the base color yellow and the tip a dark green so that it looks like real grass
