uschi 02-06-2003, 12:10 AM i´ve tested a bit around with mentalray 4 maya... cool fast
but how to do i get a clean crisp antialiasing that can compare to mayas highest quality....
i usualy used
contrast theshold below .0x
shading samps 0 > 2
and i tried all AA types
or hvae i just overseen a attrib to adjust the AA

yeah,... i´ve worked on a project, and tried this too
it very increases the renderingtime for (from about 1.30h to 2.xxh -> too slow to render 13000 frames !) a to weak result
i dont know but somewhere it must be possible to setup a value for the AA
best results i´ve got with pla<ing around with the colorthreshold
but not enough....
[ i get good results when i´m using models without little bevel borders -> but i have a lot of them and it always causes messy AA]
mr setup
lanczos 4²
shading samp 0 > 2
clrthreshhold 0.005

I have similar problem with wall that have 3cm wide vertical "planks", and 3mm space between them (hope you know what am I thinking of)
I set contrast values 0.025, min sampling = 3, max sampling = 6.
Look much better now than before, but it took 2h 55min 46sec for 640x480 pic.
Any help about rendering times?
Also... I have found something about light mapping in maya reference guide. Can anybody tell me something more about it. How much does it affect rendering time (prety much I assume) and how to set it.
Please, help! I really need this option, if it is what I think it is :)
Thanks
P.S.
About image attaching, how to attache image in the post? get some problems with it :)
thanks

Have you tried setting the defaults to "Production" in the MR globals tab?

Yes, but rendering time is still way of "normal", and quality results are very bad. Anything about light mapping settings?

is this scene lit by GI or FG ?

well, it must be - because your scene is showing many artifacts which indicate badly tuned FG and/or GI settings - a min max setting of 3/6 is definitely insane and definitely can't help you with your problem
so, tweak your GI and/or FG settings properly first

It is FG, and with contras 0.025, min setting for sampling are 3 and 6 to get results I need. Maybe to try more with contras?
There are 1000 FG rays (even with more results are same).

you have to tweak the min and max FG radius - you definitely don't have an AA problem - can you see all the dark splotches on the wall? - that means your FG is not set up properly - this can lead to washed out details like your tiled wall - you most probably won't need any other AA setting than the production's default

you have to tweak the min and max FG radius
About min/max radius, any instructionst?? I still don't have much expirience with MR so....

take a look at the sticky tutorial thread - there are some instructional videos on AW's site and some other GI and FG tutorials available - basically start by leaving min at 0 and decrease the max radius in steps - actual values depend on scene scale and ...
i think you should light your indoor scene with GI first - then add FG to get the final touch
