Title: Passage
Name: Thierry Doizon
Country: Canada
Software: Photoshop, Wings3D
This is an attempt to get away from my usual spaceships and SF environments, it seems like you're about to witness a secret ceremony... mainly PS-CS2 I used a very basic 3D mesh done using 3D Wings with no lighting, just to have a wide-angle point of view and a kind of "vertigo" feeling.

This is fantastic, the color pallet, the depth, and the anticipation of a secret gathering. I am sure it will be on the front page later today. Is there anyway we can see the basic 3D mesh from Wings without buying the magazine? Five stars, I would give you six if it would let me.

Hi,
thanks a lot everyone, it's a pleasure to receive such a warm support for this painting, I was nervous since I've tried something a bit different, far from any technological gimmicks for once (which is usually easier) and it makes me want to do more. I'll post the 3 main steps later here, nothing really crazy but at least it shows the process.

This should be a case study in perfect composition: The framing of the scene with the foliage, the rocky slope leading right down to the high-contrast focal point of the ceremony, the perfect lighting & depth of field.
It's also great to see one of these "ceremony scenes" done in a tropical jungle instead of a medieval castle. Fantastic painting!

Thanks again everyone, I'm really grateful about your comments and reactions to this picture, it's very encouraging!!!
here are 3 main steps showing the making of; as you see my 3D is really ba(d)sic (I'm ashamed) but the camera helps to define my 3 vanishing points, space and composition. I knew what I had in mind so i didn't need something more defined, neither any radiosity renderings. Then it's a question of detailing and texturing for few hours, I added the characters at the end and flipped the whole thing.

Also, for what its worth I like the boat because it adds to the story, it says thats how they got there and gives the viewer something more to think about, like their journey there. At least for me any way. Oh and much thanks for showing the steps always love to see that!

thanks so much everyone!
MoorDragon: I did this as a pure exercice, you know the main problem with a lot of artists working in the industry is that their work is actually under a confidentiality agreement for a long period of time. So as you improve your art and when the time comes to show your work, it's often outdated (personal opinion) or you just don't like it anymore or you missed a lot of opportunities. It's a good idea to keep working on your spare time to update your portfolio and don't depend on studios keeping your work secret...
plus you have the chance to work on something you really enjoy, being your own producer/director/critic, for the rest the forums are a great place to get some feedback and learn. This piece was a test with a basic 3D model and a chance to do something different.
