View Full Version : Character Animation Reel
patrickC 10-23-2006, 03:48 PM Hello everyone!
It's surely been a while since I've posted on CGTalk, I guess you could say I'm more of a lurker.
Anyway, I recently finished AnimationMentor.com and I've been working a bit on my reel.
This is still kind of a temporary reel, I've began animation on a new action/cartoony shot and would like to do another dialogue shot before I start sending out the reel to recruiters.
I would love any kind of feedback you might have for me.
Please, be harsh! :)

overall very very awesome :D i'm into stop-mo too and i loved your work! the 3d was all well done.. but the only critique i have is for the quadroped at the end. it's motion is fluid but when he looks around his mouth stays wide open! if u can fix that it wouldnt stand out as much. besides that small thing it looks like you have a pretty sick reel! good work!

Overall I really liked the reel.
I thought the lip synch could use just some tiny tweaking in some areas. Perhaps it's because of the cartoony characters, but when I see characters like that I expect slight exaggeration, so I'd normally expect to see more precise lip movements on the subtle parts of speech. Like when the doctor was saying, "impedimentology" there wasn't the lip movement I would expect.
I liked the stop-motion, but it was hard to judge because the amount of animation was limited. I would have liked to see full body movement, like walking, running, jumping, or something. The impression I got was that you knew how to do stop-motion, but you were short on time.
I also thought the quadraped could have been done better. When he jumps off at the end it doesn't seem natural. He's a big and heavy looking guy, and I would assume that when he crouched it would put a lot of the weight on his hind legs so that he could jump forward. It appeared that the weight was evenly distributed for that last jump.
But again, overall I really liked the reel. Congratulations! I know you're still doing some tweaking, so I bet this is going to look even more amazing than it currently is.
I'm going to be starting Animation Mentor next month and I hope that I learn as much as you obviously did.

From one Patrick C to another, your reel was okay. but it didn't have anything great, everything was nice and neat, but it left me feeling nothing. The acting didn't have that spark of life, your characters seemed animated but not alive. and the weakest part was of the ballie jumping on the seasaw.
the stopmotion part, again, didn't have any good acting or animation and I think you only included that to show you know stopmotion. while that may be a plus if you're applying to Aardman or Laika, it wouldn't be anything special for other studios, they wanna see good animation and they dont care what tools you made them with.
that being said, I think there were some traces of talent in your animation and if you keep working hard and improving, you could end up being a good animator.
good luck

the character animation is quite good. motion is fairly snappy, and doesn't feel unnatural. i think you could think about doing more to imbue your characters with specific personality. i think the stop-motion stuff, although nice to see for showcasing your range as an animator, is the weakest part of the reel from a character animation perspective. also maybe we are seeing a bit too much from that one project, a few other solid bits of animation (like the monster towards the end) thrown in there would show both range and experience.
nevertheless, good stuff. keep it up!
