I'm thinking of getting the Maya Complete 4.5 "Productivity Pack" (training bundle) listed on their front page. What do you guys think of this deal? Do you know if the Maya Complete license ever expires? Thanks

I bought Maya 4.0 and then upgraded to 4.5. You should think about getting a dongle with it, since you can move Maya from your current machine to a faster one (something to think about). As for license expiring....I believe it's life time.

Ed.....how did you go about getting a dongle///How mutch $ for an unlimited dongle vs. a complete one?

The price of a dongle is $150 *sniff*.......you get it through your local reseller. It may take a week to two weeks to get it since it's coming from Canada. They'll walk you through the install...

The benefit of having a dongle is say a faster machine comes out in 3-6th month, you can install Maya to a new machine - then attach your dongle. Both Maya and dongle is life time...becareful with the dongle if you're gonna go through that route...a replacement will be another $150 *sniff*

Did you switch to a dongle...or did you get one to start with?

Ya...I got a dongle with Maya 4. Then I upgraded to 4.5, and dongle worked with that version as well. Maya looks for license in dongle (you have to point to it before and after install). I paid *choke* $2K for 4.0, and another $750 for the upgdrade to 4.5. Plus $150 for the dongle. I felt rimmed in the beginning..but, it's worth it to me. Cuz at one point a legal was 13K. I've Max 4.2, but the upgrade to 5 is $795. I opted to upgrade Maya instead, as I've gotten comportable with it after some use.

I deal with www.rfx.com as a reseller.

 I know this is gonna sound terribly stupid, but what's a dongle? Is it like a little usb gadget you plug into the pc or what? Sorry, but I honestly don't know. :(

Floating licenses expire too.

Mark:Can you elaborate on expiring floating licences?

Like the server....Or the node lock ones ...?

a dongle plugs into your printer port

So, if you don't have a dongle, you can't ever install Maya on a different machine (after deleting the original installation, of coarse)?

Floating licenses, as opposed to node-locked licenses or licenses tied to dongles, have an expiration date and must be renewed. At least that's my understanding.

floating licenses expire??
that would be new to me (ok.. for maya we only have node locked) but why whould they expire?
they only do so, if you have a timed license.. i know that as long as the check is not paid you get only temp licenses that last for 2 month or so.. but i never heard that paid floating licenses expire..

btw.. since i am stuck with my 4.0 license: wasn´t there a new way to obtain your maya licenses over the net?
so if you buy a new and faster machine, you can get your license instantly?

cheers

If you wan to use a new machine....you can always move your nic card (assuming it's removable) to your new machine...I don't know if thats legal though.....

of course it is legal to move your network card to another computer.. it is nothing else but a dongle..

and of course you can relocate your software to new and different computers..
it would be a *bit* funny if your network card dies - which is about $20 - you would have to buy a new maya license..

i did some software relocations with alias myself, since we got new computers or dongles or nic cards died..

cheers

I'm really annoyed at that $150 re-licensing fee... I have had NIC cards fail... and to have to choke up another $150 is just a bunch of ----. I mean it takes A|W practically no time to relicense software...

I really think Maya should have a portable license system and stop this ridiculous re-licensing charges...

emm what??
alias lets you PAY for a relocation??

jesus.. thats new :thumbsdow

ok.. i guess that leads to exactely one thing:
user buys maya, cracks it and moves it to any computer he likes...
and guess: the old licenses wont be deleted i would say.

a user who iw willing doing the relocation should not be punished for being on the legal side.. it is not the users fault, if hardware breaks or gets old :(

cant believe it..

I'm wondering.....Do the people who pay $150...Have maintainance?..if they don't , does maintainence cover this...?

If not....well it should

i never had to pay for relocation or dongle replacement..
but that was in post price drop times..
could have changed since then or maybe my maya dealer was just a nice guy..
which is no wonder, since we bought about 20 licenses ;) (in the high price time)

Well, this is what I was told by a reseller here when I bought Complete (post price drop). SO I can only assume that their policy changed...

Basically what I understood was if you have to relicense (for whatever reason) you'll have to pay $150. If you want the dongle, pay $150. If you wanna replace the dongle, pay $150.

So basically if you can't move your NIC card, (ie part of your motherboard) or if it fails, well then whip out your wallet... :annoyed:

that is no fun :(

but btw.. i think this thread got some way off topic *grin*

emm:

YES. i think the productivity pack is a real cool offer that i would grab if i had the bucks for it..

cheers

alexx: I was just wondering... Do those books in the Productivity Pack normally come with Maya in pdf form (or html, or whatever)?

alexx

no way..
you would have to buy them all seperately and they are really not cheap!

From RFX's Kath Hayes on license:

It may be that floating licenses expire only if they're tied to a support contract or something like that. All I know is that we have to renew our licenses periodically.
