Hi,

I have a techical drawer who has done modelling with Rhino. The idea is to have the models animated and rendered in Cinema, however neither of us knows what fileformat we should use.

He exported one of the files as .obj and another in .stl, but they're both triangles in Cinema4D. Which fileformat, if any, exports Rhino quads instead of tris?

hi there,

...what's wrong with trinangles?, you are probably not intending on doing fancy stuff, like derforming withe the models, ey?

From my experience exporting to cinema4D, I have found the best results with .obj, this is because of the "normal tag" that comes with the obj file. It preserves some shading information that exists in the nurbs modell but is not actually existing in the poly model. Be sure though not to touch (chsnging geometry) of the imported obj-model in c4d, cause this will mess up your normal tag, the result can be poor shading.

You got to make sure that your nurbs modell in rhino is a solid with no open edges, otherwise the polys won´t share the points at the seams of the nurb-surfaces.
In general rhino will try to make quads, but it will also make riangles at the edges inorder to share the points...

while exporting use the detailed options. Play around with the settings..., the number of polys depend on the amount of detail you will have to show in the rendering...
I normally start with the "maximum distance, edge to surface" setting, to get an overall feel of the mesh (turn all other settings to 0). Next I either play with the "maximum angle", or density to get more details...
you will have to play around with it...
