Hello everyone :) I just finished up school and I have a 2.5 gig Animation codec file for my demo reel that i need squished into the smallest size possible without it looking like crap. I'm totally in the dark about that stuff, and the smallest I have been able to get it is 75 mbs using Sorenson 3...and its still monstrously huge.

Can anyone give me some pointers on what codec to use and what settings I should use with it? I have access to both, Apple Compressor, and Sorenson Squeeze.

I tried using H.264 and it worked perfect untill I came home and tried playing it on my computer and my Quicktime player doesn't recognize the codec.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Oh and I read somewhere that the H.264 format is used a lot for streaming online, but if the free version of Quicktime doesnt come with the codec for it, how am I able to view it?

How long is your reel?

I take it you want to deliver this on the web?

I have great success with compressing with quicktime using mpeg 4 compression with a setting of like half quality, if it looks grainy bump it up. I think QT with Mpeg4 looks the best too. Or windows media compression is awsome as well, WMV compression goes by bit rate and image quality, I put the image quality up high and set my bitrate to 1000 kbps which is really good looking crisp video, however, you can play with these settings to maximize your size, there's the variable the resolution of your movie to deal with, so if you render out at 320X240 or lower you can bump your bitrate up to get more crisp images, or if your going for full res you may want to bring your bitrate and image quality down.

Whatever you decide, Make sure you compress your audio too, that really takes a chunk out, and if you don't have audio make sure you aren't outputting it.

Try these, but they both involve Quicktime Pro:
