Potentials are the sixth and thistledown at the moment but I intend to finish the book first before progressing any further, unfortunately I aint the fastest reader so I may be another week or so yet before commiting some realtime to the challenge :(
Absolutely lovin the stuff in this challenge so far, its an honour and a pleasure to rub virtual shoulders with you guys n gals... good luck to you all, i only hope that i can compete and complete in anywhere near the same league.

OK, now having taken about 4 weeks longer than planned to read the book time has become my enemy as I have not yet finished it. I was however struck with inspiration on the whole approach of patricia and olmy to axis city.
So having sat down and played around with some layer blends and cubes this is the initial concept piece that I shall be pursuing. Any crits good bad or indifferent are all appreciated, your guidance and your suggestions are what will make me succeed in this elusive industry :)
Thank you all in advance, I only hope now that time does not deny me at the very least a completion on this.

Well have played around with a few pencil sketches but they weren't really going anywhere, however one of them looked rather similar to a cross section of a lemon... so I have spent the last couple of hours just playing around with this concept, trying to get a feel for texture and architecture. I quite like the idea of the central "dish" being organic in nature so will be giving some lemons close scrutiny tomorrow.
Any thoughts please feel free to pick apart or just pass comment.
Cheers all

Cube detailing is beautiful!, kinda borg like, for the second to last piece. Though you can get a massive sense of scale with them, very easy to narrow down all of the visual ques for axis nader down to the two cubes (they actually reminded me of subwoofers to be honest).
nice going, sean.

Hey everyone
First of all, thanks to everyone who has took the time to leave a comment, I appreciate immensly.
OK here is a development piece for the surface detailing of the cubes, not the side that accepts the singularity... Marley I have to take my hat off to you for the stroke of genius that was reference to a subwoofer, it was an inspiration!. I have myself a reference sheet now of subwoofer images and shall play around with their architecture for the designs of the hemispherical dish.
My big concern is that the cubes can so easily look like Borg imagery and so I am trying to develop a different surface geometry with that associated with those nefarious constructs! Hopefully this is evident in this piece?.
Most of my work is character pieces with focal elements being close to the viewer, doing a vast environment like this is quite a change in how it is approached, the biggest quibble is trying to emulate detail over sucha distance... ha ha, I keep finding myself staring off to the block of flats way over there :)... now if I could only see them from above!
Ho hum... well enough of my ramble, any thoughts please feel free to speak.

It's looking excellent Sean. I especially like the depiction of Olmy's ship spiralling towards the city. The surface detail looks really cool too.
I really like the idea of looking towards organic shapes for inspiration. That should also help ease the issue which Marley raised, about the cubes looking a little borg-like.

Hi folks, not anything more in the way of detailing yet but here is the linework for all of the primary perspective. I have come to really like the idea that the cubes are juxtaposed to the corridor, possibly even having some freeform movement suspended as they are above the architecture below.

Hmmm... just looking at it now, twisting the cubes like that causes issues with how the singularity connects to it. Waddya think?

Hi folks.. have had to put Eon work on hold for a while but am back now.
Well here is some ground work trying to find the basic look of the city that Patricia can see below her, the main structures are the 'girdling walls spaced at regular intervals' referenced in the book on the approach to the city. The cubes, singularity and plasma tube have all been removed for clarity.
I dont think I have the curvature of the tube nailed here so it needs a little more work, but I am happy with the general look of the structures. Any suggestions?
As always please crit.

Nice atmosphere in your pice so far. You definitely capture the feeling of being "underwater" that Bear describes in the book. The background definately feels large and curing, as you intended it. The only thing you might want to consider is the placement of Axis City against the background: It would be in the dead center of the Way, equidistant from all walls. This one feels somewhat off-center: If you were to draw in the entire circumferance of the circles we're seeing, you'd find the city much closer to this one wall we're looking at.
Anyhow, just a thought. Good luck with it and the extra time granted!

Heya sean!. looking real good. has this feeling of a cross of Star Trek TMP (1979) and Independance Day. Really like the patterns of the cube!.
In terms of scale, that can be helped along by atmospheric effects such as clouds or mist (something hinted in this shot). And supporting vehicles flying about the place.
Look forward to your next step :D.

Thanks Mike and Marley... I now realise why I was struggling so much to get the curvature right, its because my vision of the segments & navigation had them too close to the wall. Now with the right perspective and placement within the structure of the way it finally looks right... thanks for that Mike.
Marley your mention of the old star trek poster got me to thinking that the other problem I seemed to be facing was composition, so now I have gone for a tall canvas and I think it works bang on and lets me use an element from an earlier concept I did with a city horizon closer to the viewer... cheers mate!

I am having issues trying to view your latest (not a new issue 4 me unfortunately). But it reaaly looks like it is coming along. What i got to see was the mesh of detail for 'the way' and part cube aswell.
Not sure if you know this trick but, for cleaning up detailing in photoshop, I like to use a normal hard round brush from any size between 4-10 point and at an oppacity of maybe 23% and flow of around 30 from memory i zoom in real close and just neatly start cross hatching, I find it a great way to create random textures which you can pick out...
With colour, I like to use midtones over lighter areas and switch round with lightertones over darker areas if you know what i mean. Gentle hatching is a great way to give you a tidy curve aswell..I use this for all my pieces now.
Anyways i hope you can cross the finish line, you'll feel better about devoting all this time and at least gaining a new addition to your portfolio.

Hey Marley, thanks for commenting.. your advice is always appreciated. Yeah I get what you mean about the cross hatching and I will certainly have a go at the technique to see what interesting results it leads me to :). I am hoping to pull a few hours on this piece tommorrow, really I need to get it as close to finished as I can by then too (oh dear!!).
On another note I hope its not problems you are only having with my thread? and I also hope that you can get it resolved soon.

Well this is it, the final moment. Just like the awe and the wonder that Patricia could not draw her eyes from so too have I been captivated by both the depth of the book and the anxious steps I have taken in this, my first CG Challenge I have.
As the attempts Patricia made to grapple with the reality of Axis Nader, the Stone and the improbable physics, I grappled with a subject material unfamiliar and at times just as incomprehensible.
I have striven to take a viewpoint from directly overhead Olmi's ship as it approaches the cubes that form the segments and navigation of the city. This presented tremendous technical challenges with the perspective in the curvature of the walls, but I feel that I have come close to success.
For me an important element to capture was the impression that Patricia had of being underwater, I hope this can be seen. I chose not to attempt the city itself as already many competitors were doing such excellent work.
The lessons I have learned have been invaluable and will no doubt change my life and my approach in all future work, and for that I thank CGS and the extraordinary people that make up its community, to Greg I extend a very warm hand shake for allowing each and every one of us this opportunity to participate... now, onto the rest of the books in the story!

This piece turned out totally awesome, Sean!. i love the rather alien like organic texture..Zooming in on the cube is a good idea aswell, it seems to support the cubes presence and reasoning of being there!.
It really only needs more tonal/colour variation between the cube and the environment, they seem fairly similar, and so the detailing tends to feel a little too much. Regardless, this is quite an entry..Love it
Best of luck to you, mate
