View Full Version : Video: The Power of Blender Screens
kernond 10-22-2006, 10:49 PM Blender's interface offers great flexibility to its users. You can create just about any layout you need to get the job done. However, sometimes it gets tiresome setting up the same layout over and over for commonly performed tasks. You create the layout, do the work, tear it down to get back to where you were before and, sooner or later, you're recreating that same layout again.
Well, Blender's Screens functionality is the cure for Repetitive Layout Creation Syndrome (RLCS).

Another nice video. I always think about how powerful the screens layout system is, then forget about it and re-arrange windows around. I really need to take advantage of it more.
Is there any way to import a screen layout from a file? I looked through the 'append' functionality but didn't see any way to locate screen info. I know you can save it to your defaults, but if you have made a good 'modeling' layout in one file, and a good 'sequencing' layout in another file, there doesn't seem to be any way to bring them together. You can make one of them the default, but then when you load the other file, if you allow it to load the UI, it will replace all the existing screen with the saved ones.
This would give a really great item on Blendernation ....

Hey Thanks! But, I don't want to make it a habit of plugging my own stuff. Somebody else could do it though...:thumbsup:

@86point5:
I'm not aware of a way to import screen layouts. The only suggestion I can make is to be aware of the types of layouts that work best and, over time, add them to your defaults. You could also create a "library" of blend files that serve as a collection of various default settings that work well for different types of work. Load the default file of choice and start from scratch or append things from other files into that default file, then save it as a new project file. I hope that makes sense.
