I haven't finished reading the book yet, but I found Chapter 42 had an interesting segment that may provide a good illustration for this challenge. I don't even know if I'll be able to do this justice but I'm going to try.
They watched in silence as the red line of the singularity guided them toward the black shield. Lanier joined Farley and Carrolson in the rear, trying to make sense out of the instruments. They periodically registered meaningful data, but not often enough to be of much use.
"Something approaching alng the singularity -- It's a machine, big and black," Heineman said. "Coming up fast ..." Lanier pushed himself forward.
Straddling the glowing red line, a machine twice as thick as the tuberider, round in cross section, bore down on them, its surgace a glossy black. Bright purple lines on the machine's surface outlined squares and rectangles in symmetric arrays. Lanier watched in facination as the squares and rectangles opened to extrude grapplers and a variety of jointed arms. It now resembled a deep-ocean submersible - or a madman's Swiss Army Knife. "What's it going to do?"
"It's matching speed. Looks like it's --"
Colored lights flashed in the cabin. Heineman flinched and drew back; Lanier closed his eyes and batted out with his hands. "What was that?" Carrolson called from the rear. Red and green translucent objects danced again before Lanier. He reached out to touch one, but it was insubstantial.
"They're symbols or something," Heineman said. "You see them?"
"I see them, " Lanier said. "I don't know what they are, or where they're coming from."
The radio hissed again. "Please state your identity and reason for approaching the Axis City shield."
Lanier took the mike from Heineman. "I'm Garry Lanier." That'll clue them, he thought ruefully. "We're exploring. If there are problems --"
"Do you wish an advocate?"
"I'm sorry -- what?"
"You will be assigned an advocate immediately. Are you a corporeal human claiming the appropriate rights in the Hexamon Court?"
"Say yes," Carrolson advised.
"Yes."
"You will now be removed from the flaw and escorted to Axis Nader."
The machine ran one arm down the underside of the tuberider. Flying sparks obscured the windscreen; the V/STOL rolled and vibrated. Gas hissed against the fuselage and alarms went off in the cockpit; there was a wrenching sound, and with a jerk, they floated free.
The tuberider had been cut from the singularity and cast adrift. The V/STOL had then been removed from the tuberider.

Good luck, Kirt! :)

I started working on a design for the VSTOL. I'm going to base the design on the V-22 which is probably a close representation of what this craft's size would be.
First sketch is just the main cargo area and wings. At the wing-tips (not drawn) will be the propulsion engines. The book mentions a rocket in the tail section that is "aimed slightly above centerline." I'm not sure what that means ...
Centerline of the whole craft or just the tail? Eh, I may or may not follow the descriptions exactly. Some of it confuses the heck out of me because ... it's all in metrics.
lazy American never learned metrics.

Hi mate
Cool work so far, I like the fact that you explain your thoughts before you start showing artwork.
If I may ask, where did you find the book (did you buy it online, in a shop or is it a e-book)??
Is there any way I could download it for free????
Never mind the fact that u didn’t learn metrics. The design of the VSTOL looks great.
I expect great things, having looked on your cg portfolio
Hope to see some new stuff soon
Cheers mate

welcome to the stone kirt, great to see another kick ass toon entry can be expected :)
tuberiding was a nice choice, its a fun scene and offers lots of possebileties :) best of luck and have fun, rock em all. cheers :buttrock::wip:
LostPen - On the "Inspiration" page of the Challenge rules there is a link to an eBook version (I believe it's under $10). However, I chose to go the "free" route and visited my local County Library. It's past due now, but I finally finished reading it. I may have to check it out again so I can pick out more details.
TheFirstAngel - I found out that there are some interesting character segments later in the book which may be more suited to my style of work. I've never been a technical person, so I think I'll shy away from the mechanical stuff.
Chapter 57 has caught my interest now and I think I'll be illustrating the collection of characters and party like atmosphere aboard the flawship or VIP transportation disk. It's sort of amusing with it's collection of odd shaped aliens, homorphs and zero-g craziness. I think I could have some fun with this. :D

knopw what you mean, but at least in my case found good possebilety to get sum intense challenge learnboost since i put tech n hardsurface stuff asside for a long while and now got back to it with mixed feelings :p

I had some time to put together a quick sketch today. Just trying to work out a focal pose for Patricia.
I believe that I'll be using sea creatures as reference for many of the characters and may look in general for sea-type environments for the composition and design of this scene. I have much research to do.
Slowly putting together an idea ...

Beginning to layout the interior of the flawship. I'm trying to pattern this on the designs of a sea urchin. But so far it looks more like a faberge egg.
The flaw is right there in the middle. I haven't decided what I'm going to do with this yet. The book describes the interior of the ship to be rather empty with the flaw threaded through the middle (and encased by the machinery that propels the ship).
