I started this thread in the WIP forum but it belongs here.

I am trying to fake SSS in ZBrush 1.55b....
I here that laughing! I am serious!
Anyway...I dont know too much about it save what I have read by ChanLum for C4D. This all actually started buy asking opinions on my texture..some feedback. ThirdEye enlightened me to SSS and ChanLum and now I find myself not so worried about the texture...yet. I need to make sure I have the material right.
With what little I think I understand, I came up with this.

This is what I originally had started out with...

Well, I think I might have fiigured out how to get close.
Here is what I have so far.

Dont pay any attention to the lips and eyes..I havent gotten that far yet.

This material seems to be on the right track. Only two lights, white, soft shadows, with little to no ambient lighting anywhere. Just maybe a touch in the skin.

Any guidence as to where there are problem areas?

Thanks.

You're going in the right direction.

Take a look at Steven Stalhberg's tutorial... has some interesting ideas on how to hack SSS.

Hmm. Getting there, but not really skin-like yet. Unless you;re going for an alien look, which could be anything really.

I looked around for reference, and here's a picture of my daughter. She is being lit by sunlight bouncing off a snow-covered lawn, so the light is very white, with just a little blue.

In particular, notice the subtlety happening at the terminus of the light, how the skin takes on a reddish hue.

Don't give up, it is a worthy challenge!

OMG she is so cute!!
Well, shall we have another go?

Here are some more tests in ZBrush..using an experimental material.

One light only, no texture

Two lights. Again, no texture. Next to some standard ZBrush materials.

Some crits on this would be cool.

Thank you.
