I was wondering if anyone in here is a game developer or has experience texturing large environments like in BF 1942. Specifically the ground texture. You can't planar map is because with all the rolling hills, you would see stretching on the down slope.

Also, how big are the maps they use? Is it tiled? It doesn't look like it, because there are roads criss-crossing it.

First off: you can texture in layers so that you ahve a base ground texture and then overlay the road texture.

Secondly: for alrge ground planes and such you can create a flat ground grid first, apply a planar UV mapping and then start to deform it in any fashion you want to. After you are satisfied eith the geometry you can tweak the UV map where needed.
