Chong 02-05-2003, 03:57 PM I'd like to the thank the people in the WIP forum who helped me out with this. Here's a final version of the Plucky Duck acting test. I'm hope to make a series of them, but this is the first. What do you think?
PluckyTest (http://marcofoglia.50megs.com/pluckytest001.mov) about 4 megs, Sorenson 3 for Quicktime.
PS. Thnx again Emilio for letting me use your model.

why would you wanna add motion blur to it????? its a cartoon character, and the way it is modelled the LACK of motion blur gives it a REALLY cool stop motion look!
I say, go with what ya got, it looks GREAT!
but whats he climbing on?

I think it's pretty tight. I also think motion blur is a bad idea especially for an animation test. When I was going to school our instructor told us that recruiters would view motion blur as an attempt to disguise flaws in your animation. It has a way of adding fluidity even when there isn't much there in the first place. When dealing with a toon style, I believe there are more impressive ways to indicate speed than blurring. For instance, physically stretching the parts in movement gives an awesome impression of rubbery weight dragging from velocity. Always remember to use "antics" or "favours" to nudge in and out of a rapid gesture. With them you can pop from pose to pose without irritating the eye. Don't ever be fooled into thinking that "2d" techniques can't be applied (or at least tried) on 3d. For some inspiring examples check out the Gorillaz videos. I know the characters are not 3d but a lot of the wipes and smears could be.
I don't know if telling you this is redundant as you seem to know what you're doing. My only suggestion would be to try to make more arcs esp. with head and pelvis.
Again, great work.

HEy everybody,
Thnx for the response :D
This was my first real test with Plucky and i'm going to move on to a bigger animation with him. I am going to fix this clip up based on what you guys told me before i add it to my demo though. Thanks :)
Verti - I'm using 3dMax 5.
Nicodemus, Dre(hi dre)- I was having some problems with the lighting in the scene, and I still don't know what the problem is. I just gave up and left it..i don't mind it that much i guess..heh :D
Gentle Fury - he's hanging off a biped's chest. I wanted to have a real character but..well...i don't model well...hehe.

Great animation!
I agree with the previous posts, I don't think motion blur is needed at all.

Oh yeah, i forgot.
I initially had motion blur in it, but I liked the way it looked without it. I think the next one will have it though

Looking forward to the next one!

Looks awesome man.very well done. I agree you dont need tomuch if any motion blur unless hes like zooming accross the screen to help give speed but overall awesome ,a little short but thats just cause i like it so much and wanna see more...heheheh

Looks great
Are you using max5's advanced lighting? This might be causeing the flickering because it recalculates the light at every frame and when things move.........flickering can occur?
Just an idea

This is a really solid piece of animation. You've really captured the personality of Plucky, that's for sure. If you really wanted to go to town, you could have the little 'hairs' on his head bounce around a little more, due to his quick movements... Also, having the biped he's hanging off of react to the motion of Plucky would 'sell' it even more. Excellent work! Keep it up!

this may sound a little weird, but first time i saw it i totally didnt see the biped i thought it was a stack of tv's and thats what was causing the flickering (dont ask me how i saw that), and now that i know what it is, i think that would be kinda cool, hes talking to the tv! :) ahh haha ill go over here now.

It's fantastic!!!
How long has it taken you to get it that good?

As mentioned before the mouth positions for the crying at the beginning are not extreme enough.. he needs more pull in the cheek if that make ssense.
In the style of th eaniamtion what you'd need is smear motion rather than motion blur.. unfortunately I have no idea how you would do this with 3d animation. Bascially what smearing does is if something is moving really fast like a pupil darting from one direction to another is that the inbetween frames are a line from one point to the other. Chuck Jones I guess was the pioneer of this type of animation. I still see examples of it in the Simpsons every now and then.
It may be possible to modify motion blur to do this but it requires telling the renderer to blur between two points in time without a fade out. Also instead of the blur being on all the time you woul donly enable for key points wehrer ther is extreme movement.
Oh and I like what you've done so far ;-)

Don't feel bad Jeffo I thought the same thing as you did. It would be a cool idea to have him talking to the TV as so many of us Looneys do..ahhh hang on I'l join you over there..

Looking great, just one thought...
The eyes on "away" look a little scewed. The right one is smashed against the side, and his left is floating next to the edge.
And I agree, make the bip move.

Thnx guys.
Gmask -im definetly going to fix his lipsync at the beginning of the animation, thnx :)
Jeffo, Pengy - Because of the way I animated and set the scene up (bad planning on my part :thumbsdow )I'm gonna have a hard time animating the biped. It was just meant to be a character for him to hang on to, but I'm going to give it a shot anyway.
Jozvex - I animated it over the course of 1 week on my spare time.
As for Plucky himself, it's not mine. I happen to have a roomate who's an awesome character modeller/rigger. He built Plucky and
posted (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37114&highlight=plucky+duck) it here.
Thanks everyone for the comments. I'm gonna try all the suggestions, and if all goes well, I'll have an update soon..heh, I guess It's no longer a Finished work :)
I absolutely love this animation, I think that (considering the time frame it was completed in) you really captured the essence of the character :)
Hey, that looks great. Just one suggestion. After he has fallen and is left hanging there, when he is pulling himself up I think that there could be some more stretch to his body. I definitly see the squash at the top of the motion, but I think you need more stretch at the beginning of the motion. The rest of the animation principles look good. My professor at college always said,
" No exaggeration, no animation". Good job. Cel:buttrock: :buttrock: :bounce: :bounce:

I luv when he reaches out and say "don't take lassie from the children" very fluid and dramatic. One has a nice sense of the suttle real drama and cartoon flare that we all love to see in the Bugs et al. genre.
I don't mean to point this out but isn't this similar to my guy hanging off the ladder... YOU BLOODY THIEF (english accent)....... hehe:applause:
But seriously you spent what like 8 hours... over a week... that's it.
