View Full Version : MAX newbie ?. Subdivision
Hi guys, I am new to max (old softimage hand)
I am trying my hand at modelling first,
i started with box modelling and used the meshsmooth modifier to get somewhere decent. So far everyting is ok. Here are a few queries
1.
I am now trying to subdivide a Polygon within my base object in a way that is very simple in xsi but i cannot figure out in max:
by adding an edge connected to my previous edges. I cannot seem to do that
2.
I tried the Slice Plane command on selected polygon and it works but it adds a hell of a lot of extra vertices. Is there a way to get rid of them (other than the optimize modifier which messes with the other stuff)
3.
Is there a way to project a shape onto a polygon so that the new edges and vertices are incorporated into the old mesh. (a la softimage3.x)
Any other suggestions on workflow I should take into account>?
thanx

well i'm new to max myself (with no other 3d app bkgrnd) so i'll try and throw some solutions out.
1. not real sure what you mean.. but you can use the cut tool to create new edges.
http://www.end-effect.com/cuttool.jpg
2. you can switch to vertex sub-obj mode and click them and hit the Remove button
3. use the boolean tool.. with the union option.. and pick your object.

i'm most likely 100% off of what you're questioning.. but i've yet to sleep . wait til zealot or someone comes along with the right answer ;z

didn't i just tell him how he can accomplish it
anyhoo, some additional info, in 3dsmax 5, the polytoolset is extended to house some of meshtools functions ,like connect edges.
you'll have to configure your UI tho cause they're not in your editable poly modifierpanel [don't know WHY discreet decided NOT to put them in there]. I ahve the polytools housed in my quadmenu for fast access . . .
hmmm...
nice idea but somehow even if i followed correctly the instructins... it does not work.
I take a box with subdivisions, i try doing any of thedescribed operations: lets say connect 2 points with an edge.
I put an 'edit mesh' modifier or a select mesh, i select 2 points and I get 2 problems.
1. only a few of the many functions get activated in my new toolbox--not the one i mentioned..
2. if i try running these functions, any whatsoever, i get an error:
mesh operration on non mesh object: box...
now isnt the box a mesh?
any ideas?

Meshtools only works on Editable Poly objects. The name is wicked and misleading. You have to convert the object to a Poly object before using those commands, and sticking Edit Mesh on it isn't going to help you any.

Hay! I KNOW SOMETHINGS THAT CAN HELP.
To add new edges to your mesh do this:
Add or convert to Edetable Poly in the modifirer menu,
then make sure you'r in edge mode,
find the edit geomitry menu-use the cut tool there,
with vertex snape on-at the bottom of the screen.
To subivide and/or smooth you mesh do this:
there's a modifier called relax that smooths your mesh without subdividing it.
And there's another modifier called meshsmooth,
this can subdivide your mesh and smooth it,
you cand even make uneque creases and stuff, ect, with this one.
OK, keep working on it.
thank you guys! lots of help
without resorting to converting to poly (i will figure how to do that in a minute)
i found a partial answer that does clean subdivisions to individual polygons of a box: Modifier 'Tesselate'

converting to ePoly = right click object - convert to - convert to editable poly. you can also do the tess.'ing in the polygon sub object mode...
hey... another tool you all did not mention that does exactly one of the things i asked about withou needing to resort to funky scripts:
shapemerge!
quite a nice tool

nice tool indeed, but why go out of subobject mode to do something you can do twice as fast.
twice as fast with the script you mentioned, do you mean? I thought shape merge in principle was quite fast!, does it screw the workflow>?

oh HELL yeah it screws the workflow . ..
with the meshtools script, you can stay in the subobject of your editable poly [edge subobject for instance]
and connect two edges without EVER leaving your objects subobject :D
