View Full Version : Next gen Maya UI Ideas.
mustique 02-05-2003, 01:45 PM Hi guys, I sometimes think of what the next gen maya UI could incorporate... So here are some ideas:
- WWWouldn't it be great to scrub in the timeline with your mousewheel? (By defined increments when pressing ctrl or shift)
- I tought of sliders within sliders. Something like the attached image. Sure you get the picture. Maybe you could adjust values of RGB, XYZ and similar stuff with just one superslider!
- And why not giving the hotbox a real UI of its own?... Don know like what tough.
- Also the clever buttons on top of each view in XSI are great.
Most things here can be found in Maya too, but it takes too much time to acess. (I think the XSI's supra keys are neat, the interface looks cool, but there are many things I find unintuitive too.)
- The bonus gamepack could also come as standart. All views could have similar mini UI's for modelling, animating etc... The nearer things are, the better.
- The toolbar on the left could go to the top, the selection filter buttons take too much space, they could be placed in UI like dropdown menus.
- Now there we have nothing on the right, why not placing a narrowed - sticky tool options menu there? It makes me sick seeing channelbox - attr editor and the tool options settings popping up separately, and not being able to have access to both of them without opening a floating one.
- Also an visual UI builder or a synoptic view like tool, (of course easier to set up) would be cool.
- The marking menus could look better too, and the ability to access context sensitive marking menus with the same hotkey would be a big plus.
- Every parameter in the attr editor could have little setkey boxes which could also be drag and dropped onto other ones for connecting like XSI. OK this is kind of a ripp of.
Do you have similar UI ideas, maybe there is a chance AW reads this and takes notes.

i think ....
- scrubbing thru the attrib editor just like max does (sometimes aw could bite cool idea too !!!)
- iŽd like to to define some kind of default manipulators to different objects (e.g. on a character could be nice to select the neck (or some) and getting the rotate tool)
- another quiet cool tool woould be something where i can define model-states as a kind of lattice / wrapp deformer : edit a earlier and cheaper state of the model and the detail follows
- and a pick walk for polygon ( selecting neighbour verts from the actual camera view)
- a post-render colorpicker sometimes would be nice (think of logos with accurate colorvalues)
- and the REALY BEST OF ALL > please AW seperate the ****ing renderer into autonumous thread ... i want to go on working while test rendering !
- and a little additional entry in the cameras attrib editor for defining the rendering range of this camera

This is in there right now.. in the attribute editor, you can set the Default Manipulator.. then if you use the Show Manipulator Tool (the "t" hotkey), whatever you select will use that default manipulator.
whee! :)

thx jschleifer
i ve see the tab but never came to the idea to use the "t" to get the tool (thought it wonŽt work)

Ok, my ideas are:
- Being able to drag the connection (using the 'output connections' icon) of one channel to another channel in the attribute editor.
(eg you have an image in the bump slot, then you can drag it straight to the colour slot)
- To just have a 'frames per second' box on the time slider somewhere instead of having to open the Animation Preferences.
- A customizable Status Line! So that I can remove buttons I never use and add my own shelf buttons to it instead of needing the whole shelf for like 3 buttons!
Hmm, that'll do me for now.

Jason, I know you've heard this a million times, but you freakin rock man!! I realize that this was something really simple, but I've been using Maya since version 1 and I never even knew that that little feature was there, was a godsend!!

true dat jason. Kudos to those great people at Alias Wavefront. I teach a Maya class at Brigham Young University and I had a student just tell me tonight, "man, they sure did think of everything when they made Maya didn't they?"
Yes they did my friend, yes they did.

Heh, when I was first learning Maya in school an irate Max lover imported the classic teapot and made an entire scene revolving around everyone's favorite primitive.

I really need a proportionnal modeling tool like the Magnet in Lightwave. For exemple, you select a vertex, and all the vertex within a specified radius will be affected. The radius should be defined like the radius of artisan brush. I know that something like this already exist (Proportional Modifivation Tool) but it's not cool to use it, not enough intuitive.

you can always take the "recorded actions" from your script editor and put them on a shelf or create your own UI for it
and there is an alternative to the proportional modification tool available on highend3d - it's called clay dough or something - works pretty well for me

I don't see the tool your talking about, uschi. I use CPS 3.5 and I never saw such a tool.

This might be a repost, but if you all are interested in having these ideas considered, submit them to the Maya Features Site (http://www.maya.digication.com/home3.php)
I've been a long time fan of Maya's UI.

No, CPS wont help you there.
There IS a proportional modeling tool in Maya. There's also some super duper script called Clay Dough on High End. I haven't used either, but I know they exist.
