hi to all,
i am half way through the book at the moment and loving it! i am working with a friend Ray Mongey on this trailer and may add others to the team in the near future. this image is a basic idea of the logo we may use.

Hey, great to see your boards up! Looks like a great concept here. I especially like the idea of a shot where the Frants go in and out of cloak. Also the plasma tube reflection on Patricia's helmet and the pulse beats between shots. It's going to be great.

Just one comment: I wonder if Panel 4 (the side view of the shuttle) is maybe somewhat redundant? To me there's a logical progression from the establishing shot of the shuttle on the launch pad, the next closer in shot, and then the shot of the engines heating up. And so it seems that jumping back out in the midst of that progrsssion for yet another wide shot detracts slightly from the overall flow. Anyway, a very minor critique at best.

Looks like your well on the way!

Very nice animatic. Good flow, and has a good, logical progression from the shuttle taking off to the entering of the Stone. And of course, the second half with all the various images of the interior, the war, etc. It all works together very well, in my opinion. Great job!

I like the concept art stuff you posted too, especially the shuttle. Nice and crisp. You're on a roll!

Yeah dude. This is coming along nicely. I like the action that you are envisioning in your storyboard. Should make a great piece once it's done.

I also appreciate the drawings you guys are doing, getting all angles worked out so you know what the design really is before you head off to modeling, etc.

The animatic is nice and simple but definitely gave me a better idea of the movement. I'm looking forward to seeing the next step!

Finally I got a start on some modeling; this is a start on the Russian heavy lifter. I wanted it to look like a cross between a rocket (at the back) and a more modern shuttle at the front. I always thought that the rockets look immensely powerful compared to shuttles so I thought it fit well for the heavy lifter.

Hey there! I absolutely LOVE the work Ive seen here, and as a fan of the book, having read it a great many times, I find this contest amazing... Theres just two small things I wanted to ask...

1) Tanks? I dont recall any tanks in the book... the 6th heavy lifter had heavy ordinance to aid the russians in the invasion, but it never offloaded its cargo...

2) I love how your Heavy Lifter looks, but thats not the invasion lifter model is it? Just a note that the invasion Lifters were painted black as to not be seen on approach to the bore hole.

hi raktus, thanks for your post..as for the tanks, the are not in the book but we are making a light tank just to add some variety to the shots, tanks are cool thats the reasoning behind this thinking.

as for the heavylifter colour i was not aware of them being black my bad...i must have been tired at the time of reading...i have become attached to the colour we have but perhaps i might darken the red, ill have to sleep on it.

That textured version of the heavy lifter is simply outstanding. Beautiful work there! And I wouldn't worry about the colour. Tactically black makes sense, but I think for a movie and the sake of visibility some artistic license is allowed. :)

Well, the heavy lifters entering the bore hole before the death were prolly regular colored, but the 7 invading lifters during the major action scenes were black. The exact part of the book was where the American lifter was coming in to dock, the Russian lifters destroy it becuase they were hidden right behind it.

Tanks be good for action shots of the Death on Earth?

"... embarrassed troop ..." Ha! Maybe that's why he's got the helmet on. Great stuff. I honestly wouldn't have guessed this is your first realistic character. He's coming along nicely. Though I'm sure he'll appreciate pants!!

One comment: He looks just a little on the short side to me. Part of that is no doubt due to the size of the helmet, i.e. it being bigger than a normal size head. But his arms also seem slightly short. I think the wrist is supposed to more or less line up with the bottom of the pelvis (i.e. the crotch). But I can't quite tell from the angles you've posted whether or not this is so. Minor crit.

Anyway, looking good!

userBrian
12-10-2006, 01:46 AM
Yes- To make a long story short the distance from the top of the head to the crotch where the legs joins the torso is about equal to the distance from there to the soles of the feet. I don't think that's in any art book, I made it up myself.

Nice concept. He looks tough.

I presume the spread-eagle poses are meant for the actual modelling. I'm curious about the side view, in particular the arms (to my thinking, anyway) being back so far. Is that a specific technique you use, and if so are there certain advantages you find in posing the model like that initially? I haven't done a lot of character modelling, so I'm curious about such simple things. :)

like yourself i havnt done much character modeling, while the spread eagle pose wont make modeling easyr the advantage (i think) will come when the character will be riged for animation. so from that respect i think its good to model in that type of pose as it keeps the limbs away from the torso making skining a bit less painless(even tho i have very little idea on rigging). how about you would you start a diferent way? just curious.

fifty3dragons
12-12-2006, 05:56 PM
Oh, I agree with keeping the limbs away from the torso, and the model sheet looks fairly standard from what I can tell. My focus was specifically on the position of the arms. It just seemed like a fairly extreme position which would result (I think) in a fair amount of deformation to get the arm down to the side (for example, if he's carrying a rifle or something). I've seen some modellers use an approach where they have the arm positioned away from the body but only about halfway raised, so kind of in between straight down the side and in the position your model sheet indicates. That way the arm doesn't deform nearly as much in either direction.

It can be the same thing with the legs too. In the little modelling I've done, I've approached the same way you have it here. But in recent reading I've seen some people model with the knees slightly bent. Again, that way the starting pose is sort of half way between straight and totally bent and causes less deformation whichever way it needs to go (unless of course he's always just standing around, in which case it probably doesn't matter).

But as I said, I was just curious. I'm sure there are as many ways to do it a there are modellers. :) I decided against doing any character modelling for the challenge myself, but I have some personal projects I intend to pursue after this in which I'm going to try using some cel-shaded characters, so I'm trying to pick up as many tips/tricks as I can.

The troop's gear looks great, by the way. Finally he gets some cloths (though I notice no pants yet!!! :scream: ).

********

Edit: actually, I think I may have mis-stated that. I think they may have modelled as you have here, but then set the starting position for the arms and legs as half bent before beginning rigging and animation.

ye still no pants! but its near xmas so pants should be on his list. as you wer saying about modeling with the arms only slightly raised from the body thats the way i aproached my troop. the sketchs are done in the streached style but im just using it as referance.

this is the concept for the un/us troop that i am using for referance in the troop model. it is also done by stephen fagan. thoughts?

Hey, looks good. Fagan has a nice, edgy style there. And as I mentioned, your model for it is coming along great. And now that you mention it, I see that you have the arms positioned differently on the troop model. Which prompts another question: do you model with a diagram loaded into the background or do you simply do it freehand? I've always loaded my model sheets into LightWave and followed them quite closely when laying down my points/polygons, but your remarks suggest to me that you're doing straight out modelling with just one eye on the model sheet on your desk as you go.

sorry i havnt been at the pc for a few days. i do load the diagram into the background but as you said i have just keept one eye on the model sheet, but that method is not set in stone its just how i startd out on this one.

Nice shot of Earth there, and you're off to a good start with the truck too. And you're girlfriend's right: no work in Paris!!! :scream: Still plenty of time afterwards to get stuff done. Much can be accomplished in 2-3 weeks, but real-world relationships are important too!!!

Really great stuff here. You'll get it done. Keep plugging away (after Paris, of course).

I think in movement it should be good.

I think it's useless. On his storyboard this tank is only on top view, and it's very small.

thats true most of the shots we have the tanks in the background so the texture job we have should be fine, but if we need to we will fix up the texturing, thanks for the replys!

That's a really nice shot of the city. It's got a great feel to it with some good variation aomng the buildings. I like the tank too, and I agree, I think it'll look fine for the shots you have planned for it. I also enjoyed looking at the tutorial as well, though I couldn't quite read all the text even when I clicked on the picture to enlarge it. But I got the overall gist. Thanks for posting it. Great to see how others go about their work.

here is the asteroid, it is just a sphere with noise added and shaped with the ffd modifier. the texture and bump maps were made from photos of tree bark.. the debris around the asteroid was made by scattering spheres around random verts on the asteroid model.

Frank the Frant - haha that's pretty good. :) Looks like the model is coming along nicely. Are you going to rig him or just use him for a still shot (i.e. are you going to have time to animate him in the time left)? I like the asteroid as well. I never would have thought of using tree bark as a texture for an asteroid, but it looks great.

this is the russian paratroop, it will only be seen from a distance so i have made it at a much less polly count than the other troop.

Even for a low poly count that's a nice looking model. I really like the way you did the straps and the gear. Out of curiosity, what would be the poly count difference between the russian paratrooper and some of your other models?

opentarget

sorry i didnt awnser sooner, the rusian troop is about 4-5 thousand pollys depending on the bits he has, while the un troop is about 15-20 thousand pollys.
