View Full Version : Body Paint - projection paint
station75 10-20-2006, 04:39 PM Hello
I spent some time with BP and I need make one character. I use projection paint - great tool but I wonder if there is any solution for paiting style like in Modo:

Maybe I miss something or it can't be done in BP?
I think that is easy way to get realistic results in short time.

I would also like to know if C4D R10 has this included. I am considering switching to Modo as it has displacement painting too!

This looks a lot like how brushes (alpha brushes) are handled in Zbrush.
I hope some pros with R10 can take a look at this video and give the final assessment.

No there isn't anything exactly like this in bodypaint in terms of workflow, just similar.
For example you can simply copy/paste from any bitmap into the projection paint viewport, the image will show accross your model and you can move/scale/rotate it position it how you want (and if you've sensibly pasted into another layer then you can simple erase whatever borders you want to as you wish if you didn't use a nice soft feathered selection to start off with). You can also use the clone tool (just like the rubber stamp in photoshop) to paint in from any other source including from other 3d objects in viewport as well as from 2d textures (I often find it's better to be painting in the UV layout than the 3d paint layout as it has a nicely docked 2d window to work with at the same time) so it's quite easy to for example with the clone toolset up a single polygon apply whatever bitmap to it you want, give it a look at camera tag then scale/position/rotate it however you want and clone from it onto your model, bear in mind that unlike modo though the polygon can't be underneath the model you're painting as the clone tool works in projection mode and isn't locked to a single layer. then this stuff is of course all before you come anywhere near the brush bitmap stuff...

the Image ink feature is fairly different from what you have in cinema, so I'd say no you can't work exactly as he is with miving the image and then painting down parts of it. not to say there aren't comparable methods, but image ink is easier in that respect.
The Main difference lies in that the projection painting is instantly applied in modo, where as cinema CReates a special temp image really, where you can create layers, even save the current projection temporarly, bring it into PS if you want and then back to cinema before its applied. You can also work on projections at different resolutions than the actual texture your painting to, allow you to paint at a higher resolution and then have that interpolate when its applied to your texture.
For a similar but not identical method you could select a texture with a deifinable feather, then copy and paste it into the 3D view, this automaticaly setups projeciton painting, and has the image ready to apply liek a stamp, the you simply turn on detatch projection layer, this allows you to rotate around your model with projection layer before applying. This won't be as effective adn the feedback isn't quite as god because they haven't updated bodypaint to use the new enhanced ogl features.
Judging betweenthe two its a hard call right now, both have wholes the other fills well, there are a few features I've seen in Modo I really wish I had, but I've also seen a lot of things modo can't do that I can't live without.

I made this in 10 minutes - model based on Meg and picture taken from free samples of one stock:

but I have no such of control over the process that I want to have.
I mean it needs tests and tests to fit the texture that I want...

are you using the copy/paste method (with feather) or the clone tool methods suggested to do this?

no for that picture I made before you post you method - I'll test it tomorrow and I'll let you know the results. btw: thanks for the help/reply :D

It's very quick and easy to use, I made a very simple example showing this in action in bodypaint here (just using copy/pasting stuff both from a normal bitmap in a texture viewer window and even from the surface of the model and also a little bit of cloning (again from a texture as well as from other points on the models surface (you can clone /copy/paste off of other surfaces too).
Apologies for the very poor quality of the video (you kinda loose all the surface detail even when zoomed in :/) however it should at least show this stuff in action (this is about 7 mb)

I check your tip/trick and is great. You rule :D. I spen less than one hour and I got effects like below:

I know that texture need work and the hairs are little strange but I only want to show how quick and easy you can texture woman face - without experience in that part of 3D work.
Great tip anyway - thanks.
