View Full Version : Help modeling with eyes!
jcatlanta 10-20-2006, 03:07 PM Hey everyone. Well I am currently trying to model a head using the extrude edge method in Maya, and I am having a bit of difficulty making the eyelid. I know that the top lid overlaps the entire eye and the lid flaps out a bit to the side of the head. I am just having a hard time trying to model this. So far I have the eyesocket and the eyelid itself, just not the part that lips out to the side of the head. Any ideas/tutorials that I could reference? Thanks a bunch!http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/5368/facees0.th.jpg

Hi, I think I could help you if only I could understand, my English is not great, sorry. (http://forums.cgsociety.org/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#)
What do you mean with "lips out to the side of the head"? I can't understand which part it is. Can you highlight it in the picture? :)

Hey, thanks for the reply. I did not say lips, but LID outside of the eye. I kinda figured it out, but still need a bit of help on it. I think the lips need some tweaking as well. Let me know what you think.

hI!
confusion apart :), I had a look at it.
I like the delicate folds you made around the eye and it looks like it's coming out nicely. Please find here some thoughts, hoping it helps :)
Picture 1: What I would change, and for this please have a look at the image here below, is the general proportions of the face. The general rule is that the space between the rim of the hair and the eyebrows, the eyebrows and the end of the nose and the end of nose and the end of the chin should be equivalent. In yours, and it's a common mistake which everybody does, the forehead is much shorter and the part between the end of the nose and the end of teh chin is really too big.
Please have a look at the first picture attached and how I squashed the face in photoshop to make the 3 parts equivalent.
Picture 2: The part that goes between the root of the nose and the tip of the nose is too squarish, I believe. The muscle that surronds the mouth should be a little more visible on the upper sides of the mouth (the orbicularis oris).
The edges of the mouth are a bit too sharp, as it was extruded.
If you want, post an image from the front so that I can give you an opinion on the proportions of the eyes and mouth.
Hope this helps! let me know :)

I would bring the corrners of your lips in a bit and smooth out the transition on the lower lip, it's mutch too hard. Not sure how to explain it.

Hi Monica-taddei,
Thanks for all your useful input. The reference I was using had a much wider space between the nose than most people, so that is why it appeared like that. I have just finished modeling the ear and am now attempting to connect it to the jaw line. I had a hard time with the lips, since I coudl not get it to flow smoothly when it comes around http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/144/headwireframeut0.jpg
Here is a closer look at the lips:http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/6123/headlipsaz2.jpg
And then here is the image as it looks smooth. http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/846/headsmoothql8.jpg
I know I have to round out the form on the sides of the head a little bit. This is just my second head model ever, so bare with me. How is the topology so far? What about the ears? let me know what comments/crits you guys have. Thanks again for all your help

It's looking real good, congrats!
I think that the prob around the mouth is partly a pentagon instead of a quad that you have there, get read of it and it already should look better.
Post pics from the front, side, top, it will help people giving you advices even more.
