The story is set in the Dutch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands) settlement of Tarry Town, New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarrytown%2C_New_York) in a secluded glen called Sleepy Hollow, around the year 1790. It tells the story of Ichabod Crane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichabod_Crane), a priggish schoolmaster from Connecticut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connecticut) who is scared away from town by Abraham "Brom Bones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brom_Bones)" Van Brunt, his rival in love for the hand of eighteen-year-old Katrina Van Tassel, daughter of Baltus Van Tassel and a fifth-generation Dutch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands) immigrant herself. The legend featured in the story is that of The Headless Horseman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Headless_Horseman), the ghost (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost) of a Hessian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hessian) trooper who lost his head to a cannon-ball during "some nameless battle" of the American Revolutionary War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Revolutionary_War) and who "rides forth to the scene of battle in nightly quest of his head."

Well, This is as far as I got in the 35min. I had also forgotten that he used a sword instead of guns, so I will change that in the final.

35 mins PS - used concept brushes to try speed it up. made a chain brush and used that to convey the sad message that although terrifying the horseman is also a slave...

<snoby arty chuckle>

inspired by Andrew Jones work and "the Black Rider" lotr piece

Er, not quite sure how long it took as I didn't initially intend to post it so I didn't time myself. The bulk of it was done in under 35 mins I think. PSP + new wacom tablet.

Good entries, all. I love yours, embryotic. If I get time I'd like to participate.

Hi Lark. Welcome and good illustration you have there.

You're not going to believe this but I did this! And I did it in 30 minutes! It's part of an ongoing effort to paint like Daniel and Brittany, with quick strokes defined more by how it feels than by technical expertise (I'm not saying there isn't any technical expertise involved in Daniel and Brittany's work, I'm just saying that they paint from the heart!). This is the first time I think I've ever painted something without defining the form first; that's very hard for me because shape is everything to an illustrator. And I'm really starting to make use of the special brushes instead of just using the hard and soft round brush. All I'm saying is I've impressed myself and I hope to branch out more with paintings like this.

PS7/ Intuos3/ 30 min (I was going to do a horseshoe imprint but didn't feel I had the time).
