I am interested in painting with a pattern or texture. I have seen this done on a Feng Zhu Gnomon DVD on robots, but as it was not a Corel Painter How-To DVD, he did not explain the setup. Basically I believe using any round or square chalk or pastel, or airbrush, to paint in rough metalic-like textures, or stone, or cement.

Also on the recent Ryan Church Painter Gnomon DVD, in the preview clip he paints in some paper or texture patterns.

How is this done???

Searching through the Painter Help seems to focus on 1) Applying Surface Textures, 2) Using the "Pattern" brush, which is flat and creates a weird brush profile. - Not a good explanation, but basically a limited explanation of the possibilities.

These tutorials are hard to find so any help or explanations would be appreciated!

thanks

I can't say whether this will be of any help to you, but we do sell pattern libraries with a number of our products, Tree Forestry, Palm Paints and Grains & Grasses in particular. So, we offer free tutorials on how to use the brushes that apply these paints.

The tutorials mostly deal with painting trees and landscapes. Since Masked Pattern brushes are used in those tutorials, which include the necessary tools. You'll find some explanation as well. It's just a matter of whether you want to spend the time :)

Here's a page with links to some examples of how pattern brushes can work both as paints and as texturing media. http://www.gardenhose.com/tf.htm.

I tried the tutorial: "Painting Concrete Textures (Painter 8-9) Painting textures for 3D." In the PDF it specifically mentions P8. The Concrete brush library failed to load: "Cannot Load Empy Library". (This is why I use Photoshop).

I am more interested in painting "random" textures - not patterns like back and leaves. The concrete is in the general direction though. Perhaps be able to create a random texture, then paint with it varying the rotation and size. Or ideally download a set of pre-made random textures to paint from.

In addition those tutorials are mostly for P3-7, I don't know if that excludes them from P9, and Paint Shop Pro.

Thank you though, those tutorials are sort of in the right area. I'll keep looking.

You're the first to report a problem, and after thousands of downloads. I'll have a look today.

That tutorial, per the description, is about using/creating captured brushes to create surface textures. Pattern brushes aren't involved.

As for Photoshop, me too :) We actually get a lot of support from Adobe, and we hardly make any products for Photoshop.

Actually, they're mostly for Painter 6-9.5 or PSP 7-9. You have to dig very deep to find anything referencing Painter 3, 4, or 5, which is when we first started supporting Painter.

It sounds like you're new to Painter. So, it's useful to remember that the Painter community is nothing like the Photoshop community. It's smaller by orders of magnitude and is likely dwarfed by PSP as well, at least if the number of posts on the Corel support page offer any measure. The result is a dirth of Painter tutorials and freebies. Why bother?

Absent support from Corel, and we've probably sold more copies of Painter for Fractal/Metacreations/Corel than others, there's little reason to update the tutorials when a new version of Painter doesn't affect use of our products. Instead, we try to support professionals needing the kinds of tools we make, which brings me back to the original post. You may not want or need tree making tools that use Painter patterns, but you can learn something about how patterns and pattern brushes work relative to your interests.

Thank you though, those tutorials are sort of in the right area. I'll keep looking.
Good luck. Maybe you can find what you need in one of the many Painter classes advertised in Corel's newsletter.

Thank you again for your kind reply. I will review the pattern pdf tutorial again (and watch my spelling!), and check where I place the "concrete" file. I did try it though in a number of places, and again have P9.

I am not that new to Painter, but to be honest I mostly use Pshop for working with textures, blending layers, painting with textures, etc - it's just easier and quicker. I have been using Painter for a couple years with great results, but mostly straightforward brushwork. Tomorrow I will review your comments in detail and keep working on it.

Thanks again.
