View Full Version : Using Poser or Start from Scratch
JDillard 10-19-2006, 05:55 PM Hi,
I am starting out learning to model with 3Ds Max, Maya, and Poser. My question is would it be easier to use a poser character then import to max or maya? Or would the over-all quality be better to start from scratch? I have a decent understanding of the programs, however it still takes awhile to model anything. I'm sure that will speed up soon. Also, is is better to model the charcter in an upright sort of vitruvian man style or model the chracter in the pose I want him in? The reason for that is because I want to add clothes. Which leads to another question. Model the character with clothes already on or add them after? Thanks for the help with any of the questions.

I'd suggest starting from scratch, as long if it is for educational purposes - don't skip corners. Go the long route... you'll learn many more things along the way than just (how to model a man).
Also doing your character in the T pose makes it much easier down the line to apply a skeleton and skin the model which in turn gives you an option to do any multitude of poses - whereas if you just model the pose, you may find yourself angry with how it turned out and be up a creek. Also modeling in the T form is a lot easier because most things stay constrained to the word XYZ that way, very few strange angles to work around.
Look at the modeling tutorial thread in this area and there is a GREAT subd modeling webpage there.

Thanks! I have been trying to read up on the posts to see how and what people use in their pipeline. ZBrush looks like an amazing tool for detailing. I guess I should just start with the basics and work up from there.

hi!
I agree with Jtaddei. Also, I suggest you not to do everything straight in zbrush, as you need to learn 3d "traditional" modeling, too.
I suggest you to make a simple box modelled character and refine it in z brush, so you learn both techniques.
Good luck!

Thanks for the help! I just got the Character modeling for production from Gnomon. I plan to watch it tonight and learn that way. The DVD sounds like that will help guide me in the right direction. Thanks again. Oh one more question. What is your take on the best way way to model clothes? Use something like the garment maker in clothfx or actually model the clothes around the chracter and just add a cloth modifier? Again thanks for the help.
