I need to drop many roads and sidewalks onto a dense terrain mesh in 3DS MAX 8.

I've tried just cutting the asphault from the terrain and the boolean always locks up MAX.

Other than Itoosoft's Glue - is there a way to "project" objects onto other objects?

Help, my deadline is loooooming.

Thanks,

Dave

Don't use booleans!!! they are devilish :)

1)you can project curves on the terrain and loft a box model along them (best option, I believe)
2) or you project the roads as a texture

3)or you could displace the mesh with a map in black and white with the roads traced on it

3)or, you can box model the roads, with quite a few subdivions and surface deform them on the terrain.

Let me know what option you think is more suitable for your project and I will explain it in detail.

Hi Dave!
In reply to your private message, asking how to flatten the polys that constitue the perimeter of teh roads.
It is not so difficult but maybe a bit boring to do, but shouldn't take very long.
First, draw the streets on a black and white map , a big one, high res, with the same proportions of the model.
Then, instead of using it for the displacement, apply it on the object and use it as a reference to select the triangles that fall into the perimeter of the roads. Then, select the scale command and scale the selected polys on the axes perpendicular to the plane of teh object.
Hope this makes sense :)

Good luck!
