Hey guys, i thought i'd post this, i'd really like some comments and critiques. I'm really trying for photorealism on this piece. Obviously this is still a work in progress as i haven't modeled the PS2 little logo on the CD tray and a few of the textures. Right now i am really having trouble with my lighting... i can't find any good lighting tutorials. once again, comments and critiques would be awesome! be brutal!
(I included a few pics with brighter textures so u could make out the modeling detail)

Bright Pic of the back for detail (http://www.femultimedia.com/skyler/ben/brightBACK.jpg)
Bright pic of the front for detail (http://www.femultimedia.com/skyler/ben/brightLEFT.jpg)
Normal color of the PS2 from the front (http://www.femultimedia.com/skyler/ben/psRIGHTbright.jpg)

Thx again guys

from what i can see so far its not really photorealistic, its good but its not to realisim.
can you light up the image alittle its really dark.

the shadows totally look fake man.
what program you using? If your program has a user referance check out the lighting area of it.

thx for the comments guys, yeah the texture is a little blurry since i blew it up from a small PS2 logo i found on the net.

Lordmachuca: I've been recieving a lot of comments on the darkness of my renders, i'll make a point to brighten them up. As for the shadows... hehe, what i really need is a good 3d lighting tutorial or something. Right now i'm using maya 4.5 and rendering with the standard maya software. I'll definitly work on the lighting. Thx again for the critiques!

Rofl, i don't want to get into a big maya V.S. Max discussion. hehe. Maya is just what i started with since i heard max was easier. I figured i wanted to do the hard stuff first, and then transfer to max later if i wanted. I'm also taking a lightwave class soon. Anyway....... is there any lighting tutorials or any tips u can give me (or give me a URL)?

yeah im just giving you a hard time man. but why would you want to learn the hard stuff first? It will take you longer to learn and it kinda limits you in a way. you'll get stuck on something forever and totally avoid other important fundamenal aspects of modeling
like lighting for example but, hey thats just my opinion, what do i know?

humm, tutorials, have you tried 3dluvr.com

yeah, you should try Max. it is great for rendering objects made of plastic ;)

Increase the shadow buffer value (whatever...). I'm no Maya user, so I dunno, but the shadow looks strange.
And better post a brighter image.

I think the model itself looks great, and yea the lighting could use some work, but I also think that the texture itself needs some help. I think there should be reflectivity on the console itself. And even more on the cords and connection to the console. Otherwise, it looks great!

hey tha modell is really cool but you should add some dust and if i look at my ps2 it seems to have a more shiny material°^

I dont really think(/haven't come across) there is a lighting tutorial, just tutorials on what they can do and how to use attributes, mostly technical stuff.
It's mostly a trial and error/artistic thing depending on your scene and the look you wanna achieve. But when showing off a model you should generally be making it bright and even, to allow us to crit(if we cant see anything then we cant really make suggestions). a general skylight should do the trick. and entangle it's a really good PS2 model, but two thing, i see that's stopping it from being exellent is, the edges aren't chamfered/rounded enough/too sharp and your texture needs more gloss/shinyness for a real ps2 and is too greyish than black. and yet again i think that my mouth has been flapping too much you dont need a class lesson from me. peace. The best thing to do is to compare your render to a photo and see what your render is missing.

omfg entagle i hate u!! lol. I was thinking "nice, another reference shot for me" and then i started looking closer... "Hey there is no playstation text under the ps2 logo... wait a sec! THATS CG!" omg, man, i just got owned. lol ;) thx for all the replies guys. I'll make sure to bevel the edges and stuff, and add more lights. Will post again soon.

Nice model you have there. Regarding the lighting, Maybe you should try lighting it with hdri. Im not sure about maya and hdri, but I presume Maya being such a "big boy", it would have support for hdri. If youre going for photorealism, this is a very good way of acheiving good results.

keep posting

I think that you need to lessen the spread of that glow, it looks horrible. To achieve better shadows, set Depth Map Resolution to your render resolution (ex. 800), raise the Dmap Filter Size to 2 or 3, then go from there.

:deal:
