hi ive been trying to model a glove in max under edit mesh, then switching between a meshsmooth cage to see a constant result as it would be meshsmoothed. my question is, what would be the best way to add precise definition to the glove that you don't want completely meshsmoothed,
ie: i was trying to put a hole in the glove to put lace through it to make it appear like its tied up, but when i extrude the holes in the glove (that is under a loy poly cage) after i switch back to meshsmooth it totally smoothes out the holes and makes them all distorted.
is there a way to specify certain vertices on the same object not to meshsmooth after or is there some other way of adding in the precise details after as another object then attach it.
its all so confusing, i hope that question made sense to somebody! oh and im using v 5 of max if that matters.

You can meshsmooth by smoothing group, though it may take you a bit of time to learn the method.

It would really help if you would post an image of your problem.

It sounds like you could just chamfer the areas than need to be more detailed.

Check my sticky thread on Theoretical Sub-d modeling at the top of the thread list. It may help you out a bit.

but again, I pic would really help.

Thanks!

Correction, second to from the top.

But the Joan of Arc Tut they are working through is a good place to start.

hope this jpeg works, ya on the left i chamfered to make those parallel lines and then extruded those poly's then i went back to mesh smooth, i knew it was gonna mess it up like that, but im wondering if i can avoid that w/o having to chamfer a hundred times around it to fence it off.

Nope!

Gotta chamfer it.

You could try using meshsmooth by smoothing groups.

Works like this...no chamfers needed.

Give it a try, it might work:
