Title: Vengeance
Name: Matt McDaid
Country: United Kingdom
Software: 3ds max, HDR Shop, Maya, mental ray, Photoshop, ZBrush

i wanted to create a gritty composition which conveyed some sort of emotion. The character 'Gomez' has just lost someone close to him and vengeance is now taking over.
the base mesh was modeled in Maya, details were sculpted in ZBrush and textured and rendered in 3DS Max and Mental Ray.

wow. I would not even f**k with that dude, he definitely looks ready to take on the world. nice work. I like the way you put the zoom blur on it to draw focus to his face. it looks like a tear is welling up in one eye...is it?

thanks for your comments randm! you was right about the 'tear.' i wanted the character to have some story, hence the title 'Vengeance.' he has just lost someone close to him, maybe a fellow comrade and is now looking for revenge or rather, 'vengeance'. i included the tear to convey the sadness in his eyes.

Hi mattmcdaid!
I like the work! The model is cool and the focus forces the viewer to look into his eyes..
Cool concept. The only criticpoint is the bottom lip, it looks a little too bumpy (IMHO).

Very good work.
You just hit the emotion right!
Though the bump of the bottom lip doesn't really fit. Maybe less deep and broad wrinkles but much more very small and thin ones will help.

Why did you use Max in the end and not Maya again, especially when you use mental ray as renderer?

Very nice piece of work! your bang on the money with the emotion he looks both sad and angry at the same time, very effective!
I really like the overall palette of the composition, it comes across as very filmic good work.

did you use a HDR env map for the BG?

i textured and rendered it in Max because i only use Maya for making 3d assetts for games. i find the polygon editing workflow faster in maya than max. because i have more eperience in max when it comes to rendering and using mental ray shaders i thought it would be better off completing it in good 'ol max!

Amazing piece man, my comment though would be that the tear is extremely unrealistic, tears normally come out from either one of the sides of the eye, especially when the eye starts tearing. Judging from the position of your tear drop I think it should've gone a bit to the guy's left and followed the 'path' of his nose a little bit.

I also wanted to suggest that you might've wanted to show like a soldier's reflection coming at the face, to add some 'evil guy' in the scene.

Amazing job though, brilliant =D!
