Title: Nihongo Redneck Style
Name: Kamal Hasan
Country: USA
Software: Lightwave 3D, Photoshop

I have been sitting on this model for a while, so I finally decided to make it presentable to the public. What easier way than a pop-mag cover? My aim was to mix a southern girl with anime style - two things not often mixed. I somewhat tried to incorporate this idea into the magazine design also. Originally, I had duckhunt pixel art on the hat, but axed that. I really hope the manga/anime style gets across. Everything but the magazine elements was done in Lightwave. Everything else was Photoshop. As always C&C's are welcome.

EDIT: I posted this on Deviantart at the same time. While I made clear on the DA post that the tattoo was not designed/created by myself (rather James Dunn www.jamusdu.com), I neglected to do so here. So for the record: Everything, save James' wonderful tattoo, was my own doing.

It's too bright colors and elements here. It's distract attention from character to this bright elements.

as mp5 said there is to much burned areas indeed, how about to place some textures on the eyes? I know its cartoon style but eyes are most important thing in that kind of composition so :thumbsup:

@mp5

I agree I made it a bit too bright. The work was mainly done at home on an old CRT, which I didn't know was not as bright as it should have been. After seeing it at work on a nice bright LCD, I saw what I had done. Thanks for the critique.

@JmTm00

I textured the eyes with a simple texture to go along with the toon style, but it always took the focus from the piece in general. I do not claim to be any good at creating textures though, and it may be a result of that. Maybe I should make the iris' as dark as the lens so that a texture would not be an issue.

Pretty cool, I like the idea of mixing anime and southern style. Personally, I think it would've like to see the DuckHunt pixels art on her hat. I still play that game.:D

Shouldn't it be Nihonjin and not Nihongo? Nihongo is Japanese as in the language. Is that what you meant?

i think the eyebrows are too thick for a female :)

Good work but I'm a little uneasy with this mixture of real life and anime.
It doesn't really look like anime and neither like a real woman.
So it seem a little bit like lost between styles. But I think I'm just not used to such a style mixture. I think that my be something personel to me.
Anyway!
I can't see any eyelashes. I think that would help her.

Nihonjin would be "Japan person", right? I meant it to be "Japanese redneck style" as the title says. Good catch though. As far as the eyes go, I worked with them for a while, but they kept taking the center of attention away from the overal picture. So when I finally rendered something that was "okay in my book" I went with it. The lights are so hot that they make the iris's difficult to texture correctly without being out of place. I worked with the eyebrows a bit too, and decided that they were acceptable (according to the book of Masamune Shirow:).

Here's a wire. Most of the work was LW7, but I got RC2 of LW9 very recently. LW9 didn't have any effect on the final render.

Guess I cannot upload pics after the fact. Anyway here is the wireframe, thanks to imageshack: http://img218.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cgmagcoverwirenm7.jpg

what is that on the hat? I can see some polygons are coming from the head or something...can you post a wire from the other side as well?

It's a strand of hair that I ended up removing because I didn't want to resize it to fit underneath the hat. I looked at your W.I.P. and it is very impressive. I can't wait to see how your hair looks when rendered. I think LW's sasquatch(sp?) plugin works similar to how you are using maya, but I don't have maya (or sasquatch) and had to create poly strands for the hair. Needless to say the hair was a pain, and the alpha on the texture upped render time a lot too.

thanks Kamal i am happy that you liked my model but I will dissapoint you because i dont have time for rendering. I am working on my modelling reel so this is going to be, just geometry. Maybe some other time I will texture and then apply some serious rendering. For now i keep modelling :)
