View Full Version : Character W.I.P - Ghost Rider

It has been a while since i created anything 3d, after looking back at some of my shoddy attempts i thought it would be good to start something new. I saw the latest trailer for the new Ghost Rider movie and thought it would be a good character to try and challenge my "Limited" 3d skills.

So far i have only made a rough version of his skull, i felt that i need to focus most of my attention to that as it will help set the style and mood for the model.
I wanted to move away slightly from the realistis approach to design by adding in small alterations that would make him feel more demonic.

At the moment the skull weighs in at about 2000 tri's, I aim to have the model finished for around 10-12K tri's.

Nice skull so far bro! I'm expecting lots of spikes and chains from this model. Are you going to normal map him as well?

I've got a few suggestions about the skull though. He's missing a bit off the back of his head, so he's kinda neanderthal at the moment. The cheek bone could also do with being more pronounced and boney. You might want to use simple spheres for the eyes as well, to give you a better shape.

I've scribbled on your image to show you what I mean. :)

Yeah it does have a rather neanderthal look so far, im planning on sorting out the rear of the skull once i finish his lower jaw. The cheek bones are going to be pulled out to try and match the harsh edge on his nose.
I would say that making a skull is one of the hardest things i have tried to do, ill try and get an update done today!

Hey man, looking pretty good so far. One thing I would comment on is that, from what I remember from the 3 Ghost Rider comics I've read, I thought the teeth of the skull were ust human ones...not pointy. Again, I could be wrong...or, I could be right and it's a design choice.

Maybe it would look cool if you hollowed out the eye sockets a bit more?

Modeling realistic skulls can be a tough challenge indeed :)

Either way, looking cool.

Gavin_G - When looking around for images of Ghost Rider they all seem to been drawn so he has normal set off teeth ( not pointy ) I thought i would change him a bit, break the mould :D

Just a quick update like i said, i have altered the cheek bones made them stick out a bit more. Along with that the nose and brow have also been pulled out slighty, and to top it all off i have completed the lower jaw :)

The skull now weighs in 3000 K with the lower jaw added, there are some areas that need to be cleaned up, but for now it's onto the body.

Cheers for all C&C

Great start, but.. well, he's looking a bit like a primate now. In addition I think you can save a LOT of triangles by intersecting the teeth with the jaws rather than having them all as one mesh.

I was gonna model this guy, too, when I get the chance. Very cool character.

Blacker - He does look like a bit of a chimp at the mo, thats probably because i have altered the length of the jaw slightly. As for the teeth they are a kind of temporary fixture I probably will clean them up like you suggested there are some rough areas round the gob! Cheers for c&c

Update Time

Right i have now moved onto creating the body for GR, i did'nt really have much to work from apart some comic art so i decided to use the Biped in Max as a skeleton to build the body around. Not much to show at the mo apart from the basic shape of his jacket, most of the work was done from reference shots of biker jackets.
In addition to the jacket i started to play to see how i could start modelling the fire around his head, so far it's just flat poly's floating from the collar of the jacket.

I think it's the nose that throws it off? It's just that his skull is usually drawn either straight from the brow downward, or it's a bit concave. So it's still a bit chimpy, but looking MUCH better. I'd say you're off to a good start on the jacket, too! I think the proportions of the head and jacket need to be adjusted a little though. The head seems a bit too large. There are many different costumes he's worn.

Another update here! I have re workerd the shoulder and arm area of the jacket to give it a more tougher feel and look as if it had some body armour built in. Along with the addition of his spikes there have also been some minor tweeks to the brow of the skull, along with the a slightly smaller skull.

Poly count 4650 tri's.

Minor Update!

Ok there hav'nt been any major updates to the model as im feeling a bit crappy at the mo, so not in the mood to spend ages infront of a pc.
I have improved the overall look of the skull by getting rid of some useless poly's,the ridges on the side of the skull have been made sharper along with an improved brow and a slightly adjusted upper jaw.

After a session of cleaning up the head i finally got round to adding some hands to his body, this took me a while to get right because i decided to switch from modelling in Max and started using Modo (Took a while to figure the UI out!)
Anyway he's starting to come together now! I have been playing about with Modo thats why there's not been any major update.

The next step im thinking of sorting out are the flames from his head, so far most of my attempts have been done using flat poly layered up. I think what im going to do is try and model flames linked directly to the skull (kinda like fire hair do!) then fill the area around the jacket collar poly sheets. Any ideas on that would be welcome!

Good to see modo catching on, how are you finding it? :D

Model's looking good so far. I'd say there's probably too many fiddly loops on his shoulder spikes and there's a decent amount of polys you could tidy up/remove on the skull itself.

Body's looking solid, love the hands :)

ArchangelTalon - Modo has to be one of the best modelling apps i havbe ever used! It's really easy to get used to has none of the clutter and crap like Maya/Max. The best feature i have found so far is the UV editor, it's so simple and quick to use and a plus point you can paint directly onto the model.

Just a quick up date he now has a basic pair of legs, after spending several hours trying to find a starting point i gave him some heavy lookin feet and worked my way up.
After attaching them i realised there are now some minor issues with body proportions so some tweaking will be done soon.

Here's the latest on my Ghost Rider model, i've been putting in some extra time the past couple of days to try and get it to a semi-finished state. He's now got some boots added along with the most time consuming part the flame for his head.
I tried in earlier attempts to create the flames by creating one mesh that covered the entire skull but that looked like a dodgy helmet! So i settled for using flat polys between 3-5 polys in length and placing them on the skull in the same way i might create hair.

The next stage is to go round the model and clean up any dodgy areas to improve the poly flow in the mesh.

Poly Tri's - 9130

Looking good bro. :)

Once you're done cleaning the model up, i'd focus on adding more detail to the belts & buckles as they're the key area's of the model. You should also add more detail to the collar area of the jacket too, as it's a bit square at the moment.

Look at a real leather jacket and see how the leather panels are put together, small details like that would look really nice.

I've been playing with modo the past week trying to figure out how to get textures on the model, after several attempts i finally got sorted and have now started laying out the UV's and creating some textures.

The model itslef has had some alterations, with minor clean up! A new belt, lower poly spikes and the addition of small spikes on the back of the hands. The mesh has been broken up into several parts to make it easier for me to create some normal maps once UV's are all done.

A couple of the images show the basic colour shade i plan on using for the final look, and a texture test done in modo on the skull.

Thanks for the reply's guys i appreciate it. The UV's were a bit of a pain to figure out, but once it clicked with me on how the shader tree worked in modo it all sort of came together, as for the normals i will let you know bro if i need any help when i get round to it.

There are a few more details i still have to tweak with the model and a couple more additions i plan to add soon. There will be some more spikes added to the hands and forearms with varied sizes. He still needs his chain and of course his bike which i plan on staring some time this week.

Thanks.

I've been on a bit of a role today i actually got round to starting his bike, i did a bit of research to find some pics of bikes and decided to go for the modern style chopper.
I found this one bike by Choppers Inc (http://www.choppersinc.com/flash/index.asp) that has a hub-less rear wheel and thought that would be perfect feature for a demonic bike. I want to try and make it so it has elements that are real and solid but at the same time make it look as if it is made of seperate parts held together by flames.

This is the basic mesh so far, is anyone has any cool ideas let us know.

The character is not rigged properly i used the default Biped skeleton in max with default skin weights. The good thing is there seems to be very little wrong with the mesh so it deform well. Sorry for the lack of updates on the model but i have been busy lately relaxing and doing other things, like my bro pointed out.

After figuring out how the UV editing and texturing process works within in Modo i have finally started some work on the textures. At the moment this only extends to the bike cuz it was a hell of alot easier to UV than Ghost Rider!
I have had a play with some colour combinations and have settled on Black with deep purple highlights for the body work, with a rather traditional meatl finish for the Engine/Handles/Rims etc.

Another quick update, i have finally settled on a better colour scheme, im sticking with the Black as a base for the bike along with some "Flame" decals! But what i came up with was to have the areas of the bike where flames are present to look as if they are white hot, hence the colour sheme below.

There wont be much over the top texture work on the areas of heat, since alot of the extra details will be added later in some post work (Particles/Glow)
What i do intend to do is use some alphas to add fine surface cracks on the areas the go fromt white to red.

More Soon :D

I decided to take a break from the texturing and thought it would be a good point to try and figure out how i was going to do the flames. At first i intended to create them using textures with alpha's but this kind of failed to get the results i wanted.
I started playing around with using particle based fire, and after a morning of playing around came up with using a PArray from Max, which would emit particles from the wheels.

There are 4 arrays used on the bike 2 for each wheel, one which is affected by Wind
and the other static. I also tried this out on the Ghost Rider skull also using 2 Arrays (1 Static/ 1 Wind) That still needs some tweaking but so far it seems to be doing the job.

The chain was the one piece i had completly forgotten about, it took a while to make having to position each link in a way that looked good.
After spending a couple of hours sorting out the UV's i decided to start rigging the model, at the mo i have two rigs one custom made and the other is a standard Biped setup. Im just trying to figure out which would be better at the mo cus both seem to have pro's and con's. The min area im having some trouble with is the shoulder area and the spikes! i just cant seem to get the weights right :P

The pic bellow dosnt show much of the problems but i wanted to post it since it's been a few posts where i have shown the Rider and the bike together.
All thats left to do is finish the rig and do the textures.

If anyone knows of any good ways in rigging a bike please let me know!

Well i just thought i would put up a couple of new shots of the chopper since i have been working on it most of the day. There's not much left to do with it now i just need to sort out the textures for the seat, tyres and the handle grips. I also thought it would be good to show you the materials i have come up with for each of the part.
More soon.....

Thanx for all the C&C everyones posted its helped alot.

bike looks great now. only thing that bothers me on it now is the texture on the wheels. The fire looks good but the texture on the wheel itself is pretty plain.

Cheers dude, the tyre texture is still in "Development" its' the one area i want to try and get right, thats why it s a tad lame at the mo.

Thanx for the feedback i appreciate it.

well is a wonderfull charater to model, but need to work in the texture, and fire effect. Also the character need a little bit more of mass. Well good luck..

The model itself looks good. The head and flames look good (although it would be cool to get a little bit more contrast on the skull). The textures are way too clean though, and your different materials (leather, bandages?, metal, etc.) are all reading as the same tone and value. I think the black leather is too specular and it's matching the specularity of the metal. If you can tweak this a bit and add some dirt, rust, grime, etc. you'll have an AWESOME piece!

Thankx for the feedback and the areas to look at. I would have to say trying to get leather to look right is probably one of the hardest things i've tried, it either ends up looking to shiney or completely dull. I appreciate the commments cheers dude.
