I find this to be an intellectual challenge for sure.
I am thinking about a storyboard style promo, tablet drawn illustrations in 3D space, 2.5D stylee.

I used CorelDraw to draft out the letters. I then imported them into Lightwave for texture, light and final render... Later!

Nice job Ig... the logo looks great as a 2D piece and even the animated flash version looks great (you shouldve hooked up seperate movie frame rates on the shooting stars though). Keep hammering away man - J
great design! The black/in the dark "O" is a powerfull poit to watch...and is close to the feelings of the book! well done!

The frame rate on the animation I posted is 15 a second for bandwidth purps. The final will be at 30fps though.
I'm glad you picked up on the backlit "O"... Thanks... Looks like you've done alot of work as well already.
I should have a scene finished by the end of the week. (I'm on page 90 or so in the book).

You must have read some of the book, cause I'm definately seeing the 'baked potato'. It looks good, but I would add more variety and detail to Stone. This will help with the scale of it. Right now it looks much smaller than it actually should be.
Also, does the foreground object ever come into focus? If so, it's fine. But if not, I really can't tell what it is I'm looking at. It looks neat, but I can't interpret it's function.
Overall, it's a good job! Keep up the good work!

Ha. It's the potato! Great shot.
I'm assuming that's the Earth in the background (?). I only ask because at the top left over the "light" of the foreground object there's a patch that resembles a moon crater (or could be). It might be helpful to back the shot off just a bit, or change the angle somewhat,to make that clear (?). Good stuff. Even if it wasn't entered in a challenge for Bear's novel I think I could have picked out which book to associate that picture with :) .

Hey, love the depth of field with the satellite. I don't know if you are joking or serious but if the stone is really like that I think you've overdone the potatoe part, mainly because of how smooth it is. Needs more bump. Ultimately it's up to you. Well done anyway. :thumbsup:

I think you're right. The asteroid texture is pretty big... Like 5000 pix accross. I might zoom into the scene to reveal a tiny shuttle infront of the stone... That might help the scale issue some.
The blury object is supposed to be a space station... I'll add some blinky lights to it to help read that as well. We'll see.
I can see that being a little hard to read as well... That portion will be rotating slowly to reveal more earth like patterns... That should help. I might clone stamp out that little crater like anomaly though. Thanks!

P.S. I'm not all too concerned with everything being completly readable and clear. Some chaos and confusion might add some drama. After all, it is a trailer to instill a little curiosity in the viewer.

Fantastic loop! What a lot of work! Nice depth and good motion.
One question: would the text visible on their helmets (a very nice touch btw) move like that (i.e. would it move with the helmets) or would it remain static and different lines above and below show as the helmet moves? I'm not sure if I'm wording that in a way that makes sense. I'm just thinking, if it's a reflection of a stationary text, then as the helmet moves I'm not sure the text would move with it. I think rather that the reflection of the text would change as the angle of the helmet changes, because at different angles it would reflect slightly different text.
Anyway, that's a very small detail, and not something that I think detracts from the overall impact of the animation. Great job! :thumbsup:

You are right. There is so much more that I wanted to do with this but I'm moving on now to the next shot. I'm going to try for ten shots of this detail.
BTW... I wanted the text reversed and stationary on the helmets, a reflection of the cosmonauts on the window, some more backlit pipes and equipment and a few other things... Oh well. These are going to be more like HD schematics or pre-viz for more realistic shots.
I am going to pull the focus from the rear to the front cosmonaut to add even more depth to my scene. Stay tuned.

Very nice move, as expected :thumbsup: As a suggestion - you should consider the size of your shots. They need 640 pixels wide what could make your details go nuts. BTW: Any plans to show us full storyboard? I am very curious about. Keep going.

I didn't even think about what will happen once the shots are dropped to 640... Maybe I can use 720 by 480? That's 4:3.
Oh well... At least I will have all of my shots in HD... Or close to it.
I'm only on page 200 or so in the book right now so I only have a few boards and they are pretty much in my head at this moment. I think I'm just gonna wing it and spend my time on the actual scenes. I'm going to finish this challenge, I need shots for my demo. Later!

As far as I know, rulez says 320 x 240 or 640 x 480 (4:3). Coz you have to upload through the uploader which sure has this limitation :sad: Great to read that you have some plans with demoreel. l8r!

Here is part of a CorelDraw vector illustration from the above scene. The shield is a sphere in Lightwave with high reflect and specular properties, the rest is all vector art. This is how I'm going to do most of my shots... I think.

Cool! I don't know much about vector art, but I'm definitely impressed. I was sure that loop was 3D. Looks like you've got your pipeline working smoothly for you.
As for size, if you check the rules it states that the aspect ratio has to be 4:3 and the maximum size allowed is 640x480 (which means if you want to go 16:9 or bigger you have to letterbox it in the 640x480 window; that's what I'm doing). Something to do with the uploader, I guess.

ANother great shot. I like the color scheme you've chosen for this (based on the couple of shots you've posted so far) and can see it's going to all blend together very well. And again, the visuals are outstanding. I'll be watching for the loop. Keep it up!

Don't worry I think that from what I have seen so far you'll do fine in the cohesive department. I notice you uses very strong Yellow and Reds with some green. Are you going to use any other colors or are you just going to stick with these primarily?

I seem to gravitate towards this color scheme each time... Sort of a bad habit. These shots do utilize alot of bright reds to signify "danger" a little bit. I am going to change up my pallette to cooler schemes with blues and purples for the space shots, trying to stay within my style.
I am sort of having a hard time visualizing the lighting in the chambers though... If there is one long light source (plasma tube) there, seems like not alot of room for dramatic lighting experiments.
I am on page 300 or so, so maybe I'll get a better idea towards the end of the book.

This shot is a motion blur test in Lightwave. Considering how bad of a rep motion blur gets in LW, I am pretty happy with the result... It's not quite Aftereffects quality DOF or motion blur but I think it will work. The shuttle is spinning vertically as the rock is moving by it at high speed...
I set the focus on the shuttle with a pretty low f-stop to blur the rock even a little more... It looks a little better in the actual shot. I would composite the shuttle infront of an Aftereffects blured stone but there are lights emitting from the shuttle to show some of the height variations of the rock and to create even more contrast.
I will add another shuttle closer to the camera with some DOF to fill up the empty right portion of the frame. I need to light the shuttle a little better, add some stickers and perhaps some volumetric lights for contrast and atmospherics. I should have an HD loop no later than Wednsday.
Motion blur and dof or not,the scene looks pretty cool.
I think that the fx quality is not "everything"

I'm going for a money shot... Mirsky flying up the side of the stone with alot of other cosmonauts while American shuttles are spinning around them... I want the camera to follow the shuttles and some cosmonauts into a hole in the stone whre they are met by tanks strapped into the rock with wires and such. Pretty complex scene the way I visualize it in my head.
If I can pull off the shot, I will try for one more money shot of a train, parachutists and chamber. I can do the rest of the scenes with cards in 3D space and hardly any movement, depending on time left. Thanks!

Your comment about the tubelight not casting a strong shadow is correct.In a sentence Lenier steps out with Patricia into the tubelight, and it states the tubelight shadow was barely visible. Then again there are clouds in the chamber, were they under cloud cover too? Hey! But all is not lost- not to mention ,by the way, there is no night in the chambers, always tubelight-on,
I guess the elevator is really inside the cap anyway, so it would be harshly lit,probably, so that is cool. Getting back to this- you can contrast the very contrasty light outside the Stone, in outer space, with the more "Global" lighting inside the stone.:bounce:
OK-looked it up. It's in EON, obviously. Page 39. "The clear pale light of the plasma tube never varied and cast only the vaguest of shadows beneath their feet as they walked".
Now, is the elevator inside the cap or out? I read that somewhere...
Oh,yeah, even the sun on Earth casts vague shadows under clouds, so the passage must mean the tubelight casts vague shadows, period.
Also, your attack scene in the entrance to the Stone, would be harshly lit I imagine, as I plan to do such an animated scene too, if I get to it!

I guess my version will have a few discrepancies from the book for artistic reasons but I won't stray too far. I guess even lighting in the chamber shot. Thanks for the feedback and the clearing up of a few things.
Yeah, I need to figure the scale on that shot out... That's kind of why I left it and moved on to other scenes. Thinking a way to add scale to the stone... Thanks.
I redid Mirsky's thumbs and added a few details to help with the cinematics some, including the handle grips and the foreward lights.
I've always liked the lighting in the scene from the first Shrek film where the donkey and the ogre are in the castle to rescue the princess... I like the way the hot reds push on the blues there... I sorta took cues from that to light this guy here. Just a few more logos/stickers and I'm ready to render a few shots. I have some good ideas for dramatic and dynamic action shots... Let's see if I can make them happen as close as I see 'em. Thanks!

Some nice work you're putting out here. At first I thought the lighting on the still image was a little harsh, but in the loop I think it actually works quite well. I liked the scene you mentioned from Shrek as well. In fact, that's an idea I hadn't really thought of, i.e. referencing scenes form movies I like for choosing colour, lighting, etc. Sounds like a good approach.

I've been struggling to get the timing of this first shot right, as it and the last scene are some of the most important. It's ten seconds long... At 1280 by 500, 24fps and extreme antialiasing, I'm looking at about a 3-4 day render.
My rock still needs more bump and I'm not too keen on the shape of it towards the end of the shot either. The f-stop on the camera is a crazy 120, space telescope style.
I can't believe there's only a month left on this... I might not be able to finish... I'd like 5 more scenes, it's gonna be close.

Yeah, one month left. We're rounding the corner into the home stretch now. Some nice looking shots here. That's definitely a potato! :) The color scheme between the moon and the asteroid strike me as being very close. Should maybe one or the other be differeniated a bit? Looking good overall though.

It was somewhat intentional to keep my color scheme from getting away from me, which it almost always does. I tried to seperate the objects via DOF, motion and position in Z space.

This shot took a little longer than I had hoped for. Cleaning, cutting and clone stamping hidden areas is not fun.
I used a long lens approach with a short lens in Aftereffects... Not too happy with the cloud I made and the whole shot needs tweaking but must move on to the next one.

This shot was done pretty quickly. I would have liked to give the smoke trails some animation but I don't think I'll have enough time to figure that out. It would make a huge diff... Maybe after the challenge, I'll tweak this a little more.

I finished the book about two days ago. Pretty inspirational to work side by side with a huge piece of work like that. Finishing a few shots for the trailer is nothing compared to the amount of time and research going into a novel like that.

Another great shot! Smoke animation would be nice, as you say, but depending on how long the shot is on screen it probably won't be that noticeable.
One comment: I found the dark mass at the top left of the screen somewhat confusing. At first I thought it was supposed to be the moon or maybe the asteroid or something. Then after I watched it loop a few times I guessed it might be the next layer of clouds. I'm still not a hundred percent sure.:) It could possibly be removed altogether; I think the shot would look fine without it. Just a thought. But that's a minor point.
Overall it's very nice work, and will integrate well with your other shots.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm finding the same thing. It's really too late in the game to change anything now, even if/when I agree with the feedback. But I figure it can always help for next time. Plus I'm a firm believer that the comments/critiques are just as useful for the one making them (perhaps even more so) since they have to work through in their own head first what they want to say.

The only video/audio editing program that I own is Premiere 6.0. I used it to make the soundtrack and time out my clips in 24 fps. The final pieces of video are being rebuilt in Aftereffects.

There's light at the end of the tunnel (or perhaps darkness--whichever you prefer; there's rest at any rate). I had to give up all nighters once we had kids, or rather they dictated which nights would be the all nighters. :scream:

Wow, I just watched that through about a half a dozen times or so. Splendid work! Really well done. I thought the music and SFX integrated very well with the visual images, especially at the beginning with the train and how the soundtrack moved out of the sound of the crossing signal. And the rest of the soundtrack was quite captivating as well, almost haunting, especially at the end. Color-wise I thought there was also strong continuity throughout.
I've also been very impressed by what you've been able to achieve in CorelDRAW. I'll have to give that program a look sometime.
It's exciting to see all these great enties final come together. I knew this one was going to be good, and I was not disappointed. Great work!

Finally, I see your finished challenge :thumbsup: I was watching your sk8 video few weeks ago. Looks like you are lucky crazy buddy, heh. Your entry has your own style and it looks good. Somehow, I found your "adds" bit disturbing. I think black letterbox works better. Overall, good job.
