View Full Version : face modeling epidemic!
3DMan16 02-05-2003, 12:39 AM hey guys, Im doing the JOAN OF ARC tutorial, i finished the body, and moved on to the face
it said to use the Rectangle to do it, so i did it all in the Front view sicne the rectangle was flat, i got it all done up to where i was supposed to extrude the nose, and when i went to perspective view to extrude..i notice my whole face was flat....the pic on the left is front view..it looks ok..and the one on right is perspective, as you can see, its flat..
could Someone PLEASE help me make it look right so i dont have to restart... :-(
thanks..

Ehh, You really need to learn the basics of 3d before doing that.

your Not TOTALLY screwed man, (im a maya guy so don't ask me where anything is) but heres what I would do.
Right now you have an outline. now cut in the defining edge loops (around the eys, nose and mouth, and pul each vert into the appropriate 3d space...
or start over. mihgt be best to start over, training in something the wrong way yields sloppy results.

There is a great video tutorial on 3dbuzz .com in the 3dsmax section. He visually walks through modeling a face.
Setting up the references and "pulling" \ creating the model in 3D space. I think once you see the idea you will understand what the problem is.

Hay man
Take a look at the help section in max
and look at some of the tutorials they have.
study some of the head models there.
I'm sure you will get the hang of it.
Just remember to never give up.
Everybody has to start somewhere.
don't feel bad, pratice is practice.

think in 3D, don't suck in a view, try o see always how its looks in each view and in perspective, i guess you miss a reference picture in the side-view

Well, you want to make it look right and donīt wnat to restart... It is quite possible: All you need is an outline of the side view (just as the one you have for the front one). You align these images and then you start to sculpt your mesh.
A trick that I did use in the past, to compensate the lack of side views, was the use of an actual mesh head as a rererence, so I could slide my vertexes over itīs surface and know if I was going the right way, as I saw my lines sinking/floating on the surface. It is a rather piggish techinc, i know, but i guarantee you that it is easier than to go along with no side view at all...
