View Full Version : Flower Design & Rendering Tutorial Ready for Download
tomglod 10-17-2006, 11:32 PM Hi Folks,
The flower modeling tutorial is ready for download. I won't post the links in here because
I'll be adding to them and don't want to have to edit all the posts.
http://tgmanimation.122mb.com/
Go to the Volume 1 page and you should see some download links. More links will be added
over the next few days. The page contains a quick demo of the flower design system.
The tutorial consists of creating the following image. This includes modeling, texturing,
lighting and rendering. Total time of the tutorial is 80 minutes. All video files are
quicktime (H2.64 for video and Qdesign music2 for audio). File size is 98 MB (rar'd) 125 mb
uncompressed.
Enjoy, and I look forward to seeing some flower renders. And thanks in advance for any
donations.
Thanks for downloading,
Tom
PS > Scene files are included in the big archive, but are also available seperately.

Well I'm very impressed. At first there was no download button, but then suddenly it appeared and after 20 sec the download started. I did have to get rid of casino and other publicity, but that's life on the net.
The turtorial is really very well done and also followable for beginners (I think).
Good work Tom!

I finally got the file and expanded it. I started to watch the tutorial so I will get back to you on it later. I was watching the first part where you use pose mixer to create the petals. IT seems a bit of an overkill to me except if one would want to make a lot of them. Preparing the poses for the petals appears to be more work than doing one petal, use an array tool to create more and then modify each one slightly. But now that you have done the pose mixer work and made it available, it is a nice thing to keep around I am sure.
My main problem though is with the sound. It is too low. Maybe you should bring it up a bit.
Nice work.

Wow, I never even heard of the poseMixer Tag, the way the tutorial demonstration shows it is insanely cool! Thanks for this!

Yeah, the posemixer tag is probably overkill for modeling a flower but I'm glad you included it because its a useful thing to have learned.

10-19-2006, 02:28 AM
Uhm, I personally think that the posemier tag speeds things up...instead of having to hunt for points you just push around some sliders. I don't know....it works for me..but I'm glad u guys enjoyed it.
Thanks,
Tom

Pose Mixer speeds things up if you have to make a lot of different flowers, but in the case of one, the time involved in creating the morphs is probably more than using a conventional approach. I like the idea though, but in production it would not be viable, for one flower only.

Thanks guys for all the feedback. Actually the posemixer poses took like 20 minutes to do, so its jsut a little bit of extra work for a lot more flexibility and now that its done, it can be re-used.

Tom

Filefront pops up a window asking for credit card details and expiry date, so that ones out. For those who click the oxyshare link, the link you want is at the very bottom, but is in the same style as all the adverts. The page I saw had an advert "Remove porn from your PC!" then next to it "Fast and Extreme" I read over it a dozen times before it clicked in my brain that this wasn't part of the porn advert :o

Filefront doesn't ask me for a credit card when i try to donwload and over 30 people have downloadeded from there already and i don't thik that 30 people put in their credit card number. Just ignore those popups.

This is very well done to me!
The posemixer although it take a little while to initially set up, it's such a cool way to easily and accuratly tweak your models, and i really do thank you for that Tom, this will be a firm fixture in my library from now on, and know thanks to you i know how to do this myself aswell.
The other sections are very informative and i think are easy enough for begginner's like myself and users with more skillset can benefit from this.
As for the sound quality it's perfectly ok for me, i understand what you're up against here Tom, i understand you're not being able to afford other ways to do this, but i think all considered it's excellent, the sound admitadly get's a little bit ropey in places, but hey i' don't care, as long as i can hear what you're saying i'm a happy man!!
both links worked fine for me, the oxyshare link was the fastest link i tried, i tried both, and both files upzipped them selves within 5 mins and were structured nicely to keep in one folder once extracted.
A big big thanks to you Tom, it's show how much hard work you've put into this, and i'm very very grateful for it, and look forward this very large excitement for the next tutorial, especilly as it's going to be an interior!!
If you're tutorials are going to be of the same standard, or ever get any better, then i'm going to be very happy indeed.
Oh and i've also contributed a small but nice amount to you at paypal as a way of saying thanks, i've not got any money normally, but a friend paid for me on paypal, and i've paid him back since i've not got a credit or debit card or anything.
Thanks again, and as soon as i get some free time, i may post my version of the picture after using your tutorial if that's ok Tom.

hmmm not sure about paypal tom, sorry about that if it's not arrived yet, my friend did it you see, i'll have to get in touch with him and see if it's gone through ok, i hope he wasn't messing me around, it wasn't much but i wanted to give you a little something for your hard work. If not, i'm not sure what to do, as i said i'm currently unemployed and unable to work due to a nasty diabetic ulcer on my foot still clearing up, it's taken 6 months so far (sorry to mention, just thought i'd be honest).
Anyway here's my efforts after watching your tutorial, the first try i copied your measurement exactly, then varied others. I've had to compress the image quality considerably to meet the file size limit for attatchments so sorry about that.

Wow those are pretty cool renders. I appriciate any contribution that you make, you are the first one so far. And I appriciate it even more give your situation, those are the markings of a great person. THanks again. By the way, nothing has come through still. If you did make a donation, please contact paypal, I don't want you to lose your money in some transaction glitch.

haven't seen the whole tutorial yet but saw the intro and suggest the audio be changed from QDesignMusic2 codec to AAC. QDesign was great wen it first was included (QT 4 - or was that 3?) but the version built in now is not very good, perhaps there's a paid for version they want to get us to buy?. Good compression rates but very sharp tinny sound. AAC will get good rates as well with much better sound quality. Now off to watch the rest...

I tried using the aac codec, but I just couldn't get it to show up in the quicktime compression options. I installed it several times and had no luck so i did some test and the qdesign music codec was not too bad. If you guys could help me get it installed then i would much rather use that.
Cheers,
Tom

Well my friend says that he'd got an error message back from paypal, it seems he's not registered properly with them and the transaction was not valid, i've not lost any money as i'd not seen him to pay him back yet. I'm not sure if he'll try it again for me or not as he's moving house and starting a new job and all manner of things, and he obviously won't allow me to know his user details. So i'm afraid unless my foot heals up soon and i get some work, it seems you won't actually receive my little contribution, i'm very very and genuinely sorry about that, it was only about $10 i think, i'm not sure as we're in £ pounds sterling here.
It wasn't much, but it was the thought more than the money that was my meaning for this, it was a thank you for all of your hard work. Maybe i could post you a present to Canada :)
Keep up the great work, and i'm sorry once again that i couldn't thank you properly.
On a different note i'm glad you liked my renders, i really enjoy making the pot, i've just downloaded the Release 10 Demo and used the grass settings in the hair module instead of hair dept, and it's even more realisitc, but forgot that you cannot save with rel.10 lol :)
Ah well, looking cool though 10 is, it's seems to be a faster loading time, and a faster render too, especially on my poor system.
Kind Regards

Are they all captured during the old c4d design, or have you maybe been creating the last couple of tuts with the new demo/new interface? Just curious :)

I've just watched your tut. Very helpful but the sound is too quite. Is this caused by bad configuration on my side?

Tomits a shame that nobody help you... anyway tom you should register on doom9.org for proper help and understanding etc...
read this coz of your sound problem:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/h264.html
you must learn more about codecs;-) all knowledge is in google :P
Buy the pro version of quicktime for 29 $ then -> more satisfied customers will donate more ;-)
With QuickTime 7 Pro, you can create AAC (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/technologies/aac/) audio files optimized for constant quality, instead of bit rate, for a consistently higher listening experience.
Choose audio options after you recorded the .mov file, go to compression and choose mpeg-4 audio and then go to options and choose there AAC low complexity etc... thats how you can do it in the new camtasia version 4. There is a free trial, check it out.
