View Full Version : walking people in animations
jondoe0ne 10-17-2006, 03:55 PM hi gang,
i would like to know how hard is it to insert in a scene a series of walking people from axyz, or lowpolygon, for example... my main beef is that i have to do an archviz for some blocks of flats and the client asked for walking people also, and guess what, i don't know how to animate or anything else linked to CA. now, i saw over the internet that different sites provide already animated people, but i can't figure out how this works... i mean, ok i bought the little rascals, and now what? how do i make them move around? hope somebody understands my problem, cuz i am sure that it has a reallt easy solution, only that i just don't know it...

I dont know how those work that you have bought, but usually you would need (minimum):
a skinned character (character with bones-skeleton).
Motiondata for the skeleton (walk-loop). (FBX or bvh, should of course fit the skeleton).
In R9 then you would apply a motion-track to the top-root-bone of the skeleton of the character, then drag the top-root-bone of the imported motiondata into the appropriate field in attribute manager of the motion-track.
If needed you can then apply a spline-path to the motiontrack, or set the number of loops.
Check out the MOCCA tutorial for MoBlend for a tutorial.(it also has walking data).
You can also use the MOCCA retarget-tag to apply motion to different skeletons.
If the stock-material is properly prepared, it is very easy to set up those walkin people.

Try this: http://www.marlinstudios.com/products/people/people.htm
I think itīs actually the best way, no rigging and very easy to use and manage. I also did my own "people in motion" library rendering walking cycles in Poser.

Yep, that's definitely the easiest way. The downside is that it limits your camera angles and movement.

Consider hiring someone to do the figures for you. What you lose from your fee you make up by having a better piece, happier client. I've done this and it was a good idea. Its also good to figure it out yourself if you want to know how to do this for future projects, but only if you have time in your work schedule for the learning. If not--sub it.

Personally I wouldn't recommend Marlinstudios' walking people.
I have the Business attire Collection with standing people and walking people in it and to tell the truth the latter is almost useless. The problem is not to find the right camera angle or the right walking speed, with a bit of patience you can achieve it, but the models itself. From the whole set only a couple of models are decent, the rest are moving a very unnatural way (something similar when you couldn't reach the loo in time :)).
The models were recorded walking on a kind of treadmill, they do it clumsy, rigid, with small steps, you can see the effect in the Sample video in the web.
The price is just too high (299$) for the couple of useful characters, the others are not suitable for professional quality.
The Standing People are fine, I use them often, but Walking is frustrating...

Dosch do them to.

they are quite high poly, but work ok.
I have been looking at this for a while, and AXYZ figures are the best, imo. But they do not do them animated for C4d.
I have started to lean to rig the still t pose character, and apply a bvh, stock motion to them, with a little success. but the character rigs have to match the bvh rigs, and there does not seem to be a standard.
There is no easy way at the moment.
