Hi Guys

I’m a student form Germany and I’m actually writing my Bachelor Thesis about „Multipass Rendering in professional Environments”. I am looking for experienced compositors to share some expert knowledge with me.

I want to analyze the use of render passes in the vfx pipeline to establish criteria under which circumstances and reasons render passes and render layers are used. How is the workflow exactly looking like. Which possibilities have render passes to offer. Also the question to answer is if there is a consistent procedure in using multipass rendering.

What do you think is the future of multipass rendering?

I hope there are some willing pro’s out to contact me… :)

multipass rendering is ubiquitous now. There has been a large resurgence in the publication of information on this topic.

Although lots of people have been using mulipass techniques for years no-one was to keen on talking about it. I published a series of tuts on this about 2 years ago and since then people seem to have been more open to discussing pracitces.

good luck with it .

maybe the multipass rendering tutorial from 3DNY will help you.

@payton
thank you for this hint. I tried this one. Well the problem isn't how to create render passes. The question is more about how to use them wisely.

@Aneks
thanks, I will take a closer look on your tutorials today.

in my opinion its pretty much about why and not exactly how to create them. by the way - its one of the best tutorials i have ever seen.

Ron Brinkmann's "The Art and Science of Digital Compositing" explains some of the very basics about why you need multiple passes.

It's been available for like 6 years now, so it's not up to date with present-day pipelines.

Xarsas, if I understand correctly you don't just need information about how and why one user would use multiple passes correctly, you're also asking how a company would administer a multiuser multipass pipeline on a larger project, right? As in, how a single user might use professional techniques is one thing, a large pipeline is totally different. :)

?

Cheers,
- Jonas

EDIT: What's the link for that 3DNY tut anyway? ;)

@payton
yes the question is more about why and not how to create them (thats the smaller problem I have enough documentation about)

@jussing
thats it. I try to find out how render passes are used in a professional production pipelines, and on which criteria the decission for the used passes is based. This includes large and small projects, although I know those two cases will be very different. But depending on which tools are used and what type of project it is, the pipeline will be very different anyway.
