I’m editing my previous post since I probably wrote too much and nobody bothered to reply!! Lol

I’m urgently getting a new system and after a lot of research I decided I’ll go for an Intel Core 2 Duo system than a Xeon Dual-Core. I’m mostly a 2D user than a 3D (digital painting, design, photo manipulation, some motion graphics and basic 3d rendering) so I don’t think I need the dual processor that is even more expensive and more power hungry.

I’ll go for a Dell since I cant pay for a Boxx, don’t like macs and don’t want to customize it. I need a company support behind my system.

Dell offers the Core2Duos on a 975X chipset so I can always upgrade in the future for a Core 2 Quadro if I need. And I think the 8gb maximum ram that it can handle is enough for my work.

Does all these sound ok to you guys?

My current problem is that I can’t decide between the E6700 or the E6600 core 2 duo.

The price of the E6700 with vat comes to 1.875.95 uk pounds with 128mb Nvidia Quadro FX550, 160gb HD & 250gb HD, 2GB Ram 667mhz, sound blaster x-fi xtreme & 3years business and next business day support.

The E6600 with the same specs come sto 1.567.45 uk pounds with vat.

What would you guys go for?

I need something it will last me for good. I can pay the money for both cases if i need to.

Based on this http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=5160vs6800&page=1 the E6700 is obviously better but I was wondering if is really worth it to go for it.

Thanks all for the help.

Lack of replies generally indicates the question has already been addressed in other threads within the forum.

As such, either the E6600 or E6700 will be fine. If you are planning on replacing the chip in a few months, you should get the E6600, and save the extra money towards purchasing a core2quadro chip. Just ensure that the particular dell you're purchasing (I assume its either a percision, or a dell optiplex 745) has a bios update which supports core2quadro processors.

It is entirely possible that even though the machine has the capability to support a core2quadro, that it will not support the november 2.4 ghz model, as its an "extreme edition" and requires an EPS rated psu which the dell may or may not have.

If thats the case, you'll have to wait till around march 07 before being able to install a new processor. Realize however, that this will completely void the machine warranty.

For the money, I'd get the E6600, and drop the soundblaster X-FI. That card is expencive, and not really useful unless you have rediculous high end speakers, and an ear to hear the difference :P If you have crappy little speakers, or even medium end speakers, I'd just go with the onboard sound option. If I were to choose a sound card from the X-FI line, I'd pick up the very low end version. With the money saved you can probably put it into more RAM or graphics... Or jsut save it for when Core2Quadro comes out...

my previous question wasnt addressed in the forum but I got no replies. After solving it myself I edided this to the new E6700vsE6600 question. :) Thanks a lot GregHess for the quick reply!!

I'm not actually planning to upgrade to the core 2 quadro soon. I need something now that it will last for long and to have the posibilities for an upgrade if needed so thats why I thought of the core2quadro possibility. I just dont want to get something and have to change it in a couple of years. If i will risk the waranty then I might not concider it since I really need to have support on my system.

So if I go for a E6700 system now that is really good and my only upgrates for the future will be just the ram will it last me for some good time?
