Okay space is NO BIG DEAL.
Unless you make something VERY VERY Interesting,
its very boring.
ITS BEEN DONE.
Space scenes have been done well before CG came along,....

in movies, tv series, and yes, by all CG artists who know how to make a sphere and map it well. And then applying some glow to it....

Whopptyyy-dooo.

The picture i made is a big deal to me cause its the first work i have made  Just thought i'd show it on here to see if anyone likes it, guess not lol :thumbsdow

Side note : People on the WIP forum are much nicer :p

I like it.. a space sceene is a good starting projekt. No one expect people to make a photorealistic human charecter for a first projekt. An Earth scene is great for leaning how to texture a mesh.

I think its very good for a first project. I think you should work on the starry backround a bit though - the stars look a bit square like. Keep practicing and you'll get better:thumbsup:

Hey Good Guy! I saw this in the WIP only like, yesterday. This look a million times better! You really took the suggestions and ran with it, awesome job! I'm glad to see you took my suggestion about the nightside too. I'll look forward to your next project.

and i dont mind people that dont like my image, they are entitled to their own opinions :)

I agree with someone above..the planet looks great but the stars need a little work..

Hey that's good for a starting CG artist. But I don't think it's done yet!

Try a different star background, show a little nebula or something. Maybe make a satellite floating off to the side of the scene, you know there's a ton of those things up there.

Also, should the clouds really be that visible on the dark side of the earth? Maybe they're radioactive.. :p

Nice job Good Guy!

Don't worry about the jerks that would rather cut you down than give you constructive criticism. They're just a bunch of twits who don't have anything better to do than to flame people...

You've done some nice work. The atmoshpere even looks good too...I've seen that messed up quite often. I agree with Duffman too...add some other stuff to give your pics a little more interest.

OKAY For those who may be bad mouthing for my critique,

I never said it was a bad peice of art.
Heck i even did the same thing when i started off.

I'm just saying, if anybody besides my professors, John Campbell, and me could agree on is that space is not interesting unless the person does something out of the ordinary. And its not interesting because its been done well before the aid of computes, its been done on broadcast television, and film soo many times. Star Wars, Star Trek, blah blah blah, the list goes on.

Other than that, its a nice texture and glow applied to a sphere.
Overall I LIKE IT. Just the stars need help but think somebody already mentioned the star issue.

Remember i'm not saying its bad.

Hey guys,

Help out the people on here. Don't tell them what they can and cannot do. Some rich grandma might even give him a million dollars for it. Who knows? At the very least reassign him a project to do. Lemme show you how:

How about cleaning up the stars and making it have points. (Using little point lights with effects are good for stars). Even adding a well modeled satellite would do a lot for the picture.

And for those of you that say space is overdone blah blah blah....don't I recall a really popular series called Star Wars? Hmmm....wonder if that's gone out of style yet?

Peace,

Lu

P.S. And have the satellite shoot some badass laser ...lasers are cool...

Ntmonkey / Lu,

I'm not telling him what he can a cant do.
I even said I liked it...
Geeze....
And I'm not saying Space is overdone,
with the "Star Wars, Star Trek, blah blah balh".
I'm saying its been done.
I'm saying if your going to do space, make it unique and different than what people have already seen.

Make it different than anything you've seen on star wars, star trek, or overall seen before.

How to make it different?
Thats totaly up to this CG artist.
Inspire, and Imagine.
The universe is too big for our minds to even imagine.
There are probably unless posibblities of renderings a person can make just on Space alone.... but taking the time to create and find a inspiration to space is what would make a difference.
ITs what would make us wonder.

Asking each other, "If ....." or, "I wonder if...." would make anybody delighted full of thoughts and questioned.

Thats all thanks,

-A

It's always good to start with space pictures, thats how I started with 3d =), made spaceships and planets in cinema4d.

Hi Good Guy - read again the thread I gave the link to you - there are still some issues - you need to tweak the texture of the landmasses according to mixolydian's suggestions (darker, brownish). And also the stars tend to be overlit by planet earth when seen from space.

I think i'll make another layer for the clouds. but it is only good for close up. for the shorts that you've made, it is enough.

MODELING
Are the objects accurately depicted?
Are the objects cliché?
Are the objects relative to the scene/each other?

Score (max 10)___9___
i'm going to give you a 9 here, because a shpere is really really hard to screw up. i guess it could be done. maybe put the moon in there as a backdrop image. i think planets always come in pairs no? heh. i think the moon will set off the image a bit.

TEXTURING
Are the textures believable?
Are the textures cliché?
Do the textures add realism?
Are the textures distracting?

Score (max 10)___9___
the planet needs maybe a little darker texture. it's pretty convincing, for earth. the real not i have is the stars. i think they need work. it looks like a neat image of earth on top of God's "starfield" screensaver. fix them stars and you'll be sitting pretty.

LIGHTING
Is the lighting believable?
Does the lighting work for the scene?
Does the lighting set the mood?
Is lighting used to cover up poor modeling/texturing?
Are there effects used/not used that should/shouldn’t be?

Score (max 10)___7___
there's something funky about the lighting. i don't know really. i think the last time i was in space, there was actually a big reflection from the sun on the earth, if i remember correctly. it was a big round glare on the ocean. earth isn't much lit by any other real sources, except when the moon is nearing full, so while one half is super bright with a big glare mark on it, the other side is almost completly black, and you can see cities and stuff. picture a plane ride at night. can't see anything but the lights!

PLACEMENT/DETAIL
Are the details accurate?
Are there too many/too few details?
Are the details cluttered/sparse?
Do the details mask a bad scene?
Are the details distracting?

Score (max 10)___8___
put the moon in there. lighten the stars a little maybe. the stars detract from earth, while the lack of a moon does the same. unless we're looking at earth from the moon... then maybe put the moons horizon in there. maybe some city lights in the dark (night time) area.

FIRST/LAST IMPRESSION
Does the picture make you want to look?
Will the picture stand out in your mind?
Is the picture blasé or cliché?
Does the picture get the point across?
Is the image constructed well?

Score (max 10)___9___
overall this is a pretty fantastic picture. yes, it's cliche. but the earth is something everyone should be able to model. in my book (soon my movie) the very first scene is a picture of earth from low orbit. this is an important aspect to know because if your scene isn't believeable, even a simple earth, then the rest of your movie is going to be thrown off.

OVERALL COMMENTS/CRITIQUES/NITS/GRIPES
42/50 not bad! i showed you what i thought needed work. you can make it happen. hope this critique was helpful to ya!

This is a very good first start in 3d. My first day I made a planet with an asteroid flyby, looking back it was pretty bad but I thought it was soooo cool!!! Keep up the good work!!!

rich novak - I like the way you C&C, ranking system is a good way of letting the artist know what areas need work.

Your Earth image is missing something. Here, have an extra image map. :)
